Fergus boys tennis claims win over Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA – After beginning in conditions that would change the level of play on the court, the Fergus Falls boys tennis team was able to get its seventh win of the season as it defeated the Alexandria Cardinals 6-1 Thursday.

The Otters’ singles players were able to record a sweep of the Cardinals playing a combined nine sets to pick up four wins. No. 1 singles player David Schneck had a rough opening, falling behind 1-2, but quickly recovered and took a two-set victory 6-3, 6-2. Jordan Schneeberger and Cody Drake would also sweep straight set wins in No. 2 and 4 singles matches.

Brady Anderson, who had stepped up in recent meets, looked to also get the sweep in No. 3 singles but after an easy 6-3 first set, Anderson saw his opponent take the second set 6-3. Anderson was able to keep his opponent off the net in set number three and got back to form winning game, set and match 6-2.

In doubles, John Makielski and Sam Rausch breezed to a 6-3, 6-2 win, avenging an earlier three-set loss to the Cardinal duo. Nathan Kaminski-Horak and Nick Houge outlasted a second set scare to pick up a 6-2, 6-4 win and after take the first set 6-3, the tandem of Chris Bernard and Sam Steen fell in a tough three set marathon 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Our top guys had a really good day,” Otters’ coach Norm Newell said .“It’s great when your other players can see the top guys really setting the tone for the team.”

The Otters will be back in action Friday as it travels for two matches, taking on the Foley Falcons at 2:30 p.m. and the Sartell Sabres at 4:30 p.m.
