Our Opinion: Give Wild kudos [UPDATED]Published 9:17am Wednesday, May 7, 2014 Updated 11:18am Wednesday, May 7, 2014
No matter how the postseason turns out for the Minnesota Wild, we commend the professional hockey team for a job well done this season. They exceeded expectations.
In case you have been not paying attention, here is what’s going on:
In the second round of the NHL playoffs, the Wild are down 2 games to 1 to defending Stanley Cup champions Chicago Blackhawks after winning last night 4-0. The Wild are in the second round by a hair. They knocked off the top seed in their section of the bracket, the Colorado Avalanche, 4 games to 3. The Wild squeaked out a victory in overtime of the final game of that series. It was thrilling and scary at the same time.
Not only that, the Wild came back and won that series against the Avalanche after being down 2 games to none.
The Wild finished fourth in the Western Conference with a record of 43-27. It is the second time third-year coach Mike Yeo has guided the Wild to the postseason. Last year, the Wild lost to the Blackhawks in the first round.
Let’s hope the Wild can get over the hump and defeat the Blackhawks once and for all, but if they don’t win, we were pleased with how well the Wild played this season. They sure outperformed the other winter pro sports attraction in the Twin Cities, a basketball team known as the Minnesota Timberwolves. But that’s another subject for another day.
