ST. CLOUD — With hopes of building a solid resume before Section 8AA seeding, the Fergus Falls Otters took the field Thursday to play three games against Central Lakes Conference foes with a doubleheader versus St. Cloud Tech and a single game against Sartell.
Battling a very windy and cold day, the Otters were able to claim a game one win over the Tech Tigers 5-3. In an offensive battle that saw each team collect double digit hits, Fergus was able to build a 5-0 lead with a run in the first, three in the second and two in the fourth inning. Tech would rally scoring a run in the fifth and two in the sixth, but the Otters would close the door in the seventh to seal the victory.
In game two, the Fergus girls struggled in the field committing three errors and the Tigers pounced to collect a 16-5 win. Tech would knock around 20 hits and take a 6-0 lead after the first inning to lean on the Otters until the end.
Fergus was able to regroup on its bus ride to Sartell as it hopped off, took the field and walked away with a 13-2 victory over the Sartell Sabres. The Otters played a close game until busting it wide open in the sixth with seven runs to close the door on the Sabres.
Devonie Smith led the Otter girls from the plate in the three games going 8-for-11 with four triples, four RBI and six runs scored, while teammate Taylor King was also reliable at the plate going 9-for-12 with three doubles, three RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases.
Pitchers Jenna Hutchins and Amber Boese each claimed victories on the mound for the Otters. Hutchins got the win against Tech, striking out three, while Boese got the victory against Sartell sitting down four and walking six.
With weather postponing and canceling games, the Otters needed to finish out its regular season schedule in a short amount of time as seeding for the playoffs begins Sunday.
The Otters, who currently holds the number one seed in the section’s Southern Division, will travel to Moorhead Friday for a doubleheader against the Spuds beginning at 4 p.m.
