Military roundtable explores the female side of the Civil War [UPDATED]

Published 7:13am Monday, June 30, 2014 Updated 9:13am Monday, June 30, 2014

The Otter Tail County Historical Society invites the public to attend the July gathering of the Military Roundtable at 2 p.m. Monday, July 7, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls.

The conversation will focus on the female side of the Civil War. Using excerpts from the Civil War Diary of Ebenezer Corliss, Otter Tail County’s first county attorney, the group will learn about some of the “Patriotic Ladies,” “Hillbilly Hussies” and “Working Girls” he encountered. Participants will also hear how some women in Minnesota coped with the loss of income, farm labor and protection when their husbands and sons went off to war. Missy Hermes will demonstrate some Civil War era fashions.
