Fergus boys golf in third after first day at state

JORDAN — The Fergus Falls boys golf team got off to a great start Tuesday as it currently sits in third after one day of play at the Class AA state golf meet at the Ridges of Sand Creek.

The Otters posted a 308 team score, eight strokes off the leader Providence Academy (300) and two behind second place team Mankato East (306).

“It may sound cliche however, we believe you can’t win a two day tournament day one, but you can lose it,” Otters’ coach Ben Jurgens said. “The boys today played a very under control round and are really excited for tomorrow.”

The Otters were led by junior Chris Swenson with a 73. Swenson is currently in 10th place overall and four strokes off the leader Austin VanSytzama of Delano. Senior Keaton Lausch was second on the team with a 76.

A nice surprise for the Otters was freshman Dyson Thacker’s day one 78. “Dyson Thacker played a tremendous round of golf today. His 78 was his lowest competitive round of the year and he was very smooth in doing it,” Jurgens said.

Rounding out the Otters’ day one scores included Levi Soydara (81), Andrew MacFarlane (84) and Ryan Smith (85).

With the Otters playing some of its best golf late in the season, Jurgens feels confident in their chances going into the second day of the tournament, but knows they have to play within themselves.

“The boys are going to go out tomorrow and be loose but focused and play the course. We are going to take care of ourselves and believe good things will happen,” Jurgens said.

The first Otters’ golfer will tee-off at 12:45 p.m. today.
