The Detroit Lakes man arrested for allegedly stealing a vehicle, hitting a fire hydrant and then trying to steal another vehicle was charged Monday in Otter Tail County District Court.

Jacob Daniel Syverson, 24, was charged with three felony counts of theft and gross misdemeanor DWI.

According to the criminal complaint, Syverson was at a wedding reception Saturday night in Ottertail when he got into an argument around midnight and then walked away to a local bar. After leaving the bar, he allegedly walked through some trees and stole an unlocked pickup with a camper trailer; the keys were inside. He drove to Fergus Falls, reached a dead end and tried to turn around, unaware that he hit a fire hydrant, the report says.

He reportedly left the vehicle and camper, jack knifed near the hydrant, in the area of Broadway and Stanton avenues and walked by the river through a swampy area where he lost his shoes. He allegedly grabbed a nearby cinder block to smash a driver’s side window of another vehicle, but he couldn’t find the keys, so he knocked on the doors of three homes in the 600 block of Stanton Avenue to ask for help. One of the residents called police at 5:15 a.m.

A preliminary breath test showed his blood alcohol concentration to be 0.186, and he was arrested.

The stolen pickup was valued at $23,000, the camper was valued at $3,000 and the broken pickup window cost about $200 to repair, the report says.

Syverson’s criminal history includes a DWI conviction March 27, 2012.

Syverson’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 28.
