Matt Waclawik, Fergus Falls, is one of seven University of Minnesota-Crookston hockey players named to the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association All-Academic Team. In order to qualify, a student-athlete must be at least of sophomore standing and have at least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average. Waclawik is a graduate of Fergus Falls High School.

Janae Zutter, New York Mills, has been named to the fall semester dean’s list at Bemidji State University. Students carrying 12 or more semester hours during any one term and earning at least a 3.25 (B-plus) grade point average are given this honor.

Anastasia Skillingstad, a music student at MSCTC-Fergus Falls, will present a vocal recital on Tuesday, April 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Waage Theater. Skillingstad, who studies with MSCTC instructor Teresa Ashworth, will perform works of Mozart, Scarlatti, Schubert, Vivaldi and others. Susan Sanner is her accompanist. Claire Roberts of Fergus Falls has accepted a $1,000 Transfer Scholarship from Bemidji State University for the 2007-2008 academic year. Roberts is a sophomore majoring in elementary education. The Transfer Scholarship is available to Minnesota community college transfer students who have completed an associates degree with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
Natasha Schroden of Fergus Falls is a member of Bemidji State’s Northern Student newspaper staff for fall semester. Schroden, a junior majoring in science education, is the copy editor. The Northern Student, founded in 1926, is BSU’s student-run newspaper. It is a weekly newspaper that covers campus and community events.

Burke is a first-year student at SJU. The President’s Scholarship is presented to students with excellent academic records and strong leadership and service credentials, and is a four-year renewable scholarship.

U of M at the Fair
The University of Minnesota is gearing up once again to be among the largest attractions at this year’s Minnesota State Fair. Fairgoers are invited to visit the university’s main building and stage located at the corner of Dan Patch Avenue and Underwood Street, Minnesota State Fairgrounds, St. Paul, from Thursday, Aug. 23 through Monday, Sept. 3.
Over the course of 12 days, more than 100 university experts and scholars will be on hand to share their cutting-edge research and discoveries that have impacted the world. Visitors can view the innovations the university has brought to life as it embarks on its goal to become one of the top three public research institutions in the world.
All five U campuses and more than 40 colleges and offices will showcase their programs and services at locations throughout the fairgrounds.

Nicholas Schmidt of Fergus Falls graduated cum laude from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind., this spring. Schmidt, who was also named to the spring semester dean’s list, has accepted employment with the Air Force in Alamogordo, N.M., as a project engineer.

Gard, whose mother lives with multiple sclerosis, plans to attend Bethel University where she will pursue a degree in pre-medicine. Gard is also the recepient of a National Merit Scholarship from Bethel.

Rebecca Rosendahl of Fergus Falls participated in the second annual Umbrella Project exhibit at Bemidji State University. Rosendahl is a sophomore majoring in art.
The exhibit, held in the Touché Gallery at BSU, is an extension of a visual foundations class offered though the Department of Visual Arts. Students researched the living conditions of individuals impacted by things such as natural disaster and war, and painted scenes depicting these conditions on oiled paper umbrellas.
Matthew Bischof of Fergus Falls gave a presentation at Bemidji State University’s Student Scholarship and Creative Achievement Conference. Bischof is a senior majoring in aquatic biology who gave a presentation entitled “How Does Timber Harvesting Affect the Hydrology of Seasonal Forest Ponds?” In this study, Bischof monitored the water levels in various wetland areas in northern Minnesota to determine their relationship to the surrounding forest.

Jessica Boehger, Fergus Falls, is one of 22 Saint Cloud State University students who have been awarded scholarships. She will receive the June M. Hiemenz Spychala Memorial scholarship.
Northwestern College
Amanda Jensen, Fergus Falls, graduated from Northwestern College in St. Paul with a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology and Bible, a minor in coaching and a concentrations in health/wellness. Amanda is a 2003 graduate of Hillcrest Lutheran Academy.

Krista Schmidt, Fergus Falls, was among more than 1,500 St. Olaf College students recognized for academic achievement at the college’s annual Honor’s Day convocation Friday, May 4. Honor’s Day recognizes students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or better and students who have been awarded scholarships and fellowships.

Jon Hjelle of Fergus Falls, has been awarded a Link Manufacturing Ltd. Engineering Scholarship at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. Hjelle is a senior majoring in Engineering and Computer Science, with emphases in Information Systems and Computer Hardware.

Kathleen Cox and Kristen Lien of Fergus Falls were among 1,382 students completing requirements for graduation. Both women earned Bachelor of Science in Arts and Science degrees. Cox graduated with Cum Laude honors.
Finlandia University
Lana Bosak, Underwood, was recently recognized by Finlandia University, being placed on the Dean’s List for Spring 2007 semester with a grade point average of 3.6. The Spring 2007 semester Honors List recognizes students who completed 12 or more credit hours and earned a notable grade point average of 3.50 to 3.749.
Luther College
Lucas Westby, Erhard, a senior at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, was inducted into the Luther College chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa national academic honor society at a ceremony held Sunday, April 1.
Becky Grismer Nursing Scholarship
Three students will receive a $500 Becky (McClintick) Grismer Nursing Scholarship. The scholarship was established in memory of Becky, a 1971 Fergus Falls High School graduate. Rachel Jennen and Kayla Schonhardt of North Dakota State University and Eric Lutzwick, a student at the University of North Dakota were the recipients.

• $10,000 awarded to Courtney Bernu, daughter of Vincent and Jeanette Bernu of Deer Creek. Courtney is going to be attending Moorhead State University this fall and plans to go into the field of Speech Therapy.
• $10,000 awarded to Amanda Patron, daughter of Tom and Mary Patron of New York Mills. Amanda is attending Fergus Falls Community College in Fergus Falls and is pursuing a career in Mathematics.
• $7,500 awarded to Scott Iverson, son of Gale and Rebecca Iverson of Parkers Prairie. Scott is attending Fergus Falls Community College and will be pursuing a career in the Business field.
Single Year Scholarships:
• $2,500 awarded to Kenneth Szymonowicz, son of Larry and Barbara Szymonowicz of New York Mills. Kenneth will be attending Jamestown College and will major in Business Administration with an emphasis in Economics and Computer Science.
• $2,500 awarded to Alyssa Lemon, daughter of Tracy and Mary Smith of New York Mills. Alyssa is planning to attend Moorhead State University and focus on a teaching career.
• $2,500 awarded to Eric Weller, son of Terry and Janet Weller of Perham. Eric is planning to attend North Dakota State University this fall majoring in Engineering.

Kristine E. Knoll of Fergus Falls, a biology major at Minnesota State University, Moorhead, is one of 317 students nationwide to receive the $7,500 Goldwater scholarship from the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.
She was selected from a field of 1,110 scholars who were nominated by faculty members from colleges and universities across the country.
Concordia College
Shane Garrahan, Fergus Falls, a junior at Concordia College, Moorhead, was a member of the cast in Bill Bozzone’s “Sonny DeRee’s Life Flashes Before His Eyes,” for the 2007 One-Act Play Festival.
Daniel Ringquist, Fergus Falls, is one of 40 students studying abroad as part of the Summer School program at Concordia College, Moorhead. Ringquist is participating in the Spain Summer School Abroad program.
U of M, Twin Cities

Kelsey Fjestad, 2005 graduate of Fergus Falls Senior High School, has received a several scholarship awards through the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota. Fjestad will receive: The Charles Sweningsen Scholarship, which is awarded to journalism majors with an interest in editing; The Patrick Connolly Scholarship, awarded to a journalism major in the news-editorial program who displays excellent academic performance and journalistic potential; The Herbert B. Elliston Scholarship, granted to students based on merit.
U of M, Crookston
Josiah Loll, Campbell, a student at the University of Minnesota, Crookston, received a Youth Leadership Award from the Red River Development Association (RRVDA). The award was presented at the Honors Banquet that was held on March 31, in conjunction with the Valley Farmer Homemaker awards.
BSU
Bryan Buhr of Frazee is a member of the 2007 Bemidji State University baseball team. Buhr is a sophomore pitcher majoring in mass communications.
Also at BSU, Alex Franck of Ashby, a junior majoring in industrial technology, is a member of the College of Professional Studies Student Advisory Group. The group provides student input on administrative and academic matters to faculty and administrators.

Rebecca Henderson, Rothsay, has received a $1,000 Upperclass Scholarship from Minnesota State University, Moorhead. Sarah Lyngby and Karena Stowman of Fergus Falls had works selected to appear in “New Voices,” an anthology of poetry and prose written by high school students, published at Bemidji State University.
Dani DeVillers of Perham and Nicole Perala of New York Mills volunteered to work the 17th annual Share the Future program at the University. Volunteers assist with registration, conduct sessions and escort participants, as well as perform other assigned duties.

Heidi Auseth of Fergus Falls, received four gold awards at the Central Minnesota Advertising Federation (Adfed) Awards ceremony at Alexandria Technical College.
Ingrid Laugtug in Germany
Ingrid Laugtug, the daughter of Loren Laugtug of Fergus Falls, was one of 44 students awarded an all-expense paid summer study trip to the Federal Republic of Germany after participating with 26,000 other students in a nationwide German testing program administered by the American Association of Teachers of German. She will take the trip this summer.
Mount Holyoke
Sarah Solie of Fergus Falls is a student at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass., the oldest college for women in the U.S.
