Road projects need funding

Published Saturday, December 30, 2006

It wasn’t that long ago that visitors from neighboring states knew they had entered Minnesota when their tires stopped bumping around on potholed roads and they could easily see the center line.

Recently, that trend has been stuck in reverse.

Voters realized this in November when they voted for an overhaul in the state’s transportation funding formula, dedicating a larger portion of motor vehicle sales taxes to roads and public transit.

When the 2007 Legislature convenes, it should tackle transportation funding. Countless road improvement projects around the state are awaiting the go-ahead, and very few can afford to wait any longer. Despite a mild winter thus far, spring will still open up fresh potholes, and a continuing surge in new drivers and bigger cars will only exacerbate the problem.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
