Grad returns and opens salon
Sets out to create peaceful atmosphere

Jenny Nelson, owner of the just-opened Salon and Co. in Fergus Falls, is taking a new angle in the local hair-styling game.
“I’m trying to bring something new to this town,” she said. “I want people to be able to come in and feel relaxed and have a peaceful time.”
Salon and Co. is painted in quiet earth tones, accented with a stand of bamboo stalks and throughout are black-and-white photos of Marilyn Monroe.
Quiet country tunes play in the background while a scent of vanilla sweetens the air. Coffee and chocolates are available in the waiting area. The two hair stations sit slightly apart from there, implying a sense of privacy.
This ambiance suits the Fergus Falls grad’s low-key, friendly personality.
However, she is quite serious about her styling work.
“I do a whole consultation for my customers,” she said. “I prefer to schedule an hour for them.”
A graduate of the Cosmetology Careers school in Duluth, she served her apprenticeship in an upscale Palm Springs, Calif., salon, where she studied under Jose Niera.
From there, she struck out on her own, leasing a chair in Centralia, near Olympia, Wash. She moved back to Fergus Falls last summer, and opened Salon And Co., last month.
“Business has been good,” she said. “I’m pleased with the number of customers I’m getting. I think I’m getting a lot of work through word-of-mouth, which is everything, in this business.”
She is a qualified stylist and Redken colorist.
“I do everything,” she said. “Razor cuts, scissor cuts, men’s and children’s cuts and the off-beat cuts, too, like the faux-hawks. I like doing trendy cuts, like up-dos and formal styles for proms.”
She also does custom extensions, round-brushing and flat-ironing, and specializes in coloring.
“I like trying to bring out the eyes and complement the skin tone,” she said. “I do more natural looks — that’s what’s out there, right now.”
Salon and Co. is located in suite 100 at 309 S. Mill St. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Walk-ins are welcome during regular business hours.
She works evenings by appointment.
