Barky’s Resort undergoes upgrades, including new cabins

Published Monday, April 16, 2007

Barky’s Resort on the south shore of Otter Tail Lake is being upgraded in a big way by replacing seven old trailer homes with six new all-season duplex cabins and a single-family cabin.

New owners Kathy and Marc Gruenenwald already had this in mind when they bought the resort in August of 2005.

“When we bought it,” Kathy said, “this was one of our goals — to upgrade the property and make it a comfortable year-around resort for the people visiting Otter Tail Lake.”

The duplexes will all have full kitchens, bathrooms and living rooms. There will be four 2-bedroom, one 3-bedroom and 1 handicapped-access, 2-bedroom duplex. Each duplex building will have a lockable door in the dividing wall to facilitate larger groups.

“Also, they will all have in-floor heating, gas fireplaces and air conditioning,” she said.

The design process included a lot of research on their own, as well as with their general contractor.

“We had help from Dave Erwin Construction,” she said, “but the divider door, I think, was our idea.”

The single-family cabin will be have three bedrooms, a full kitchen and one and a half baths.

The buildings are framed up, roofed and sheathed, and construction is due to be completed by May 1.

Asked how they are taking to the resort-owner lifestyle, she said, “We’ve enjoyed it. We meet a lot of great people and look forward to next season.”

Up next for them:

“To rest,” she said, “and get them booked. We’re taking bookings now, and do have some (reservations) for July already.”
