Pawlenty on the right track

Published Thursday, August 16, 2007

We are glad to see that Gov. Tim Pawlenty wants to continue Minnesota’s position in the forefront of the bio-fuels revolution. His call last week for greater use of bio-diesel sounds good here in farm country.

The governor, speaking to farmers and others in the agriculture business at last week’s Farmfest in Redwood Falls, said that he would like to see diesel fuel sold in Minnesota contain at least a 20 percent biological component. If that can be done, while retaining the fuel’s integrity as an energy source, it would expand an important market for soybean growers – much as ethanol has done for corn.

It is not clear that bio-fuels will ever effectively replace petroleum products, but during this period of transition, they can be an important supplement. And their economic benefits to rural America are significant.

We appreciate the governor’s desire to help Minnesota’s bio-fuel industry.
