Looking ahead a bit, Monday, Aug. 27, will be a very special day as we present "Safety for Seniors."
Representatives from several agencies have been invited to participate as they speak on various important safety issues.
In the morning, there will be sessions on Scams/Triad (Otter Tail County Sheriff's Department), Medication Safety (Lake Region Healthcare Pharmacy), Fall Prevention (Lake Region Healthcare Pharmacy), Medicare Scams (Otter Tail County Coordinator on Aging).
The afternoon sessions will include Fire Safety (Fergus Falls Fire Department), K-9 Demonstration (Fergus Falls Police Department), Identity Theft (Fergus Falls Police Department), Elder Abuse (Someplace Safe).
Everyone is invited to attend, either for the whole day or only for those sessions in which you have a special interest. A detailed program indicating specific times for the various sessions is available in the Senior office.
If you plan to stay for the noon meal that day, featuring a chicken patty, be sure to make a reservation at least a day in advance by calling 736-6842.
On Wednesday, Aug. 22, at 11:15 a.m., Eunice Digre, Lutheran Social Services director, will present a seminar on "Guardianship." Learn about the responsibilities of guardians and the type of decisions they make in the care and treatment of persons needing protective services.
August birthdays of our members will be celebrated on the 23rd at 11:30 a.m. Join us in wishing them a "Happy Birthday." Remember to make a reservation and stay for the baked ham afterward.
If you are one of the many people plagued with the pain of arthritis, here is an opportunity to gain information, confidence and skills to take control.
The Senior Center in cooperation with the Arthritis Foundation is offering a program beginning Sept. 10 and continuing each Monday thereafter from 9 to 11 a.m. for a six-week period. Instructors are Diane Scott and Kim Shea.
In addition to basic information about arthritis, participants will learn ways in which to decrease pain, relax and deal with stress, healthy eating, the importance of gentle exercise, facts about arthritis medications, strategies for dealing with depression, fatigue and energy conservation. There is no cost but since class size is limited, pre-registration is required by Sept. 6.
Some of you have asked about the July issue of the Golden Page. It is now available in the Senior office. Fall harvesting is featured along with some mighty tastey picnic recipes.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by ElaineRenoire (anonymous) on August 20, 2007 at 6:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I hope Eunice Digre's seminar on Guardianship includes a lenghty discussion of guardianship abuse -- now a national epidemic and only to get worse with the Baby Boomers coming into guardians' radar.
A guardianship Ward is stripped of all rights, including the all important right to complain. Without the right to complain, helpless Wards find themselves victimized by the very people who are supposed to be protecting them.
Guardians and their attorneys get rich --- guardianship Wards are driven into Medicaid. Taxpayers then pick up the tab for the Ward's care while the guardians and attorneys are out living the high life.
For more information on guardianship abuse, visit the National Association to STOP Guardian Abuse at www.stopguardianabuse.org.
Please warn elderly and vulnerable people of the predator out to steal their retirement, life savings, and sometimes even their lives.
Yours,
Elaine Renoire
