Workers staying warm as Cleveland work progresses

Published Saturday, December 8, 2007

The weather outside may be frightful but construction continues at Cleveland Elementary, now home to a heated work shelter.

A project this week has been putting in concrete forms for the wall on the west side of the future gymnasium, said Michael Beach, RA Morton Construction Manager.

The work, done by Saldana Concrete out of Rice, will continue next week when the concrete is poured.

The other major project this week, Beach said, has been the masonry on the north side of the north classrooms.

The workers, from Johnson-Nelson Masonry in Ashby, are situated under a shelter heated by small propane-fired heaters, providing some relief from the cold. Workers are tentatively scheduled to waterproof the masonry next week.

The combination of snow and cold, Beach said, has made life at the site more difficult than in weeks past.

“Everything you want to do is covered in snow,” he said, explaining that workers have kept busy shoveling off and warming construction materials.

When concrete for the gymnasium wall is poured next week, Beach said, the area will need to be warmed for a day so that the concrete won’t freeze.

Despite the challenges of working in winter weather, Beach said, workers at Cleveland have been in the business long enough to handle them well.

“All of the people involved in this are very experienced with winter shelter work,” he said.

When work on Cleveland is complete — projected for August 2008 — the site will be home to a new gymnasium and eight additional classrooms.
