Veterans’ Memorial Hall taking shape in Elbow Lake

A new addition to the Grant County Museum — devoted exclusively to veterans’ memorabilia — is progressing well. The timetable is on schedule to have everything in place prior to a dedication and grand opening of Veterans’ Memorial Hall close to Memorial Day 2008.
When members of the Grant County Historical Society approached the Elbow Lake American Legion Post for help in developing a display dedicated to military veterans, little did board members know that an entire new addition would be built.
“The veterans voted to not only fund construction but also to oversee the entire project,” Museum Director Patty Benson said.
“It’s great to see Phase One — fighter plane replicas as part of the west wall — mostly completed.”
After all the work is completed, the addition will be donated to the Grant County Historical Society.
It had become evident that adequate space in the current facility was lacking. That’s when Legion members stepped up to the plate.
The Veterans’ Memorial Hall and its contents will honor Grant County veterans who have served their country in all wars and conflicts.
Legion posts from throughout Grant County have been invited to participate in both contributions and planning for the interior exhibits.
The 40-by-46-foot addition was built with energy efficient concrete forms — and off-peak underfloor heating will help hold down energy costs. Construction, under the direction of M&L Construction of Elbow Lake, started Aug. 20. The building was completed in late October.
Books on display, as part of the fighter plane replica exhibit are installed on the west wall of the addition to the museum, include “Classic Fighters,” “American Combat Aircraft,” “Top Gun Fighters” and “Seapower.”
