Loss of Christmas may be retained by simple greeting

As I sat down to write this column earlier in the week, I drew a blank. I turned to my computer for inspiration and found the following e-mail:

"On the way home last night, I was listening to the radio when a newscaster called his 91-year-old grandmother to talk to her about the 'holidays.'

He mentioned that he had noticed that Christmas has become so 'politically correct' that no mention of Christmas is made by most retailers and we now wish people 'Happy Holidays.' His granny said she missed the old-fashioned Christmas when everyone wished each other “Merry Christmas.”

"I thought about it and agree, so this year I will be making a conscious effort to wish everyone “Merry Christmas,” my way of saying that I am celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.

Maybe we can prevent one more treasured tradition from being lost in the sea of 'political correctness.'"

In observance of Christmas, the Senior Center will be closed both Dec. 24 and 25, and there will be no noon meal served.

December birthdays will be celebrated on Thursday, the 27th, at 11:30 a.m. Make a reservation and stay for the noon meal afterward featuring roast pork.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our Annual Giving Endowment Fund Campaign. As our Endowment Fund grows, we continue to be able to provide for our seniors today and tomorrow as only the interest generated from this fund may be spent. As a non-profit organization, all donations are fully tax deductible.

The Senior Citizens Program is accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers, a unit of the National Council on Aging. We have also earned the seal of the Minnesota Charities Review Council by adhering to all of their standards. Our fund drive continues through Dec. 31, 2007, so there is still time to make a contribution.

The Senior Center will be having a combination Christmas and New Year's party on Dec. 31 at 1 p.m.

If you wish to take part in the gift exchange, bring a $3 gift. There will be Christmas carols to sing and also refreshments.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the staff, we wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.

Comments

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
