FF Senior Center had a busy, rewarding year

Published Saturday, December 29, 2007

About this time, the news media becomes engrossed in producing special programs such as "The Year in Review."

This past year in review at the Senior Center reveals a very eventful time. At the top of the list, once again we met all standards and received re-accreditation from the National Institute of Senior Centers. Moving on to activities, we held two successful Pancake Feeds and conducted our special year-end Annual Giving Campaign to fund our endowment.

We sponsored two trips to the Chanhassen dinner theater in addition to a trip to Stillwater for the River Boat and Trolley Tour. There were also several trips to musical extravaganzas around the area. February, March and April included free Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE). We participated in two or three Concerts in the Park with the Underwood Lions providing their fantastic pork chops.

Kim Shea and Diane Scott initiated the first of several Arthritis Self-Help exercise classes, co-sponsored by the Senior Center and the Arthritis Foundation. Many seminars and activities were held, too numerous to mention individually although Medicare Part D was on the list along with health seminars and many special programs during Senior Center Month.

We were fortunate in having Attorney Jamison (Jay) Cichosz available monthly for free individual consultations by appointment and John Armstrong also provided free ear wax checks and hearing aid cleaning monthly by appointment. State Services for the Blind were available once a month, too.

The nutrition program provided a well-balanced, healthful noon meal daily, Monday through Friday. Now, I still haven't mentioned the Golden Page, quilters, the Chore Corps, Senior Companion Program, our Adopt-a-Class, blood pressure clinic, foot care and our public relations emissary to the community and the Kitchen Band.

2007 has been a great year with much activity.

A reminder that our combo Christmas/New Year party will be held next Monday, the 31st, at 1 p.m. There will be laughter, refreshments and song. Come join us for "Auld Lang Syne."

The Senior Center will be closed on Jan. 1, and there will be no noon meal but on Jan. 2, we hope to see you as we begin 2008.

Best wishes for a very Happy New Year.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
