IRS announces taxpayers have until April 16 to file

Published Thursday, January 25, 2007

The IRS announced today that taxpayers will have until April 17th to file their taxes. The change from April 15th will have little effect on most taxpayers.

By law, filing and payment deadlines that fall on a Satuday, Sunday, or legal holidy are timely satisfied if met on the next business day. Under a federal statue enacted decades ago, holidays observed in the District of Colombia have impact nationwide on tax issues.

The District of Colombia observes a new Emancipation Day on April 16th. Officials only recently became aware of the intersection of the national filing day and the District of Colombia’s observance of the holiday, after most forms and publications for the current tax filing season went to print.

Mike Smith, CPA in Fergus Falls, notes that the change in date will not mean much to most taxpayers.

“Most people will have taken care of their filing already. The change doesn’t signify any change in the process, only in the day that it’s due.” he said.

He noted that all filing or dates contigent on the April 15th filing date will follow suit, and fall due on April 17. Such changes might affect refund claims or payments made to IRAs; “all those things are then extended by one day. But it’s not a big change.”

Smith doesn’t feel that taxpayers will take advantage of the extension or delay their filing until the last minute. “Again, most people have already filed. And with the late notice, chances are no one will really know about it.”
