DNR makes move to purchase on Dead Lake

Published Tuesday, January 30, 2007

The Department of Natural Resources took steps toward the purchase of 52 acres of land and on Dead Lake, to be used as a Wildlife Management area.

According to Don Schultz, Area Wildlife Supervisor at the DNR, the purchased land would be tied into a parcel of land already owned by the DNR. “Dead Lake is important in terms of the variety of wildlife. It will be a good opportunity to protect that shoreline. And much of that land is timbered or woods land, with deer, turkeys, and a small separate lake” he said. “It will tie in with the current 650 acres well, and we will be able to provide a better service road into the area.”

The DNR has sought and gained the approval of the county board for the purchase. However, board approval is only one of the preliminary steps towards acquiring the land.

The land next needs to be appraised and the appraisal approved by the Attorney General’s office. Appraisal and its review process will determine fair price and move towards a closing on the sale. An appraisal has been made, but State approval is still pending. Schultz suggests that the approval may take some months.

Should the appraisal be approved, the land would then be sold to Trust Republic Land Organization. Trust Republic is serving as a go between for the DNR and the State in the purchasing process. Bob McGillivray of Trust Republic said Monday that the appraisal should meet no resistance by the State’s review, but it would not be uncommon for a second appraisal to be made to determine the fair price of the land. Trust Republic Land Organization would then sell the land to the DNR.

Funds for the purchase would come from state bonding money and private investors, according to Schultz.
