TRIAD educates elderly on all the scams, old and new

Published Saturday, July 21, 2007

Recently a group of people consisting of law enforcement and service providers of the elderly met to organize the Otter Tail TRIAD. TRIAD which stands for "The Right information and Direction," is a national organization, operating on the county level.

It was developed because of increasing concerns about crimes against the elderly. Much has been done to educate the senior population about fraud, scams and crimes committed against them but scam artists continue to come up with more clever and sophisticated schemes almost daily, thus the need for constant awareness and education.

Senior citizens are invited to sit on the TRIAD council and participate in meetings. If interested in becoming involved in these efforts, please register in the senior center office.

Next Thursday at 11:30 a.m., we celebrate birthdays of our members born in July. That would be 45 — if they all attended.

Come to the party, wish them well, make an advance reservation and continue the celebration with a delicious noon meal featuring a ham dinner.

Thursday (the 23rd) also marks another Concert in Roosevelt Park. Enjoy the folk, gospel, country music of Nita Velo assisted by friends and family plus a picnic served by Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Once again, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all of our friends who have been saving their Sunmart grocery receipts for the Senior Center. We reached our goal of $150,000 and will receive a donation of $1,000 from Sunmart for our activity fund. We appreciate your continued help and are most grateful to Sunmart for this program.

We're starting to collect material for the July issue of the “Golden Page,” which will feature harvesting this month.

Do you remember those days of horses and hay racks, threshing machines and bringing lunch to the threshing crew?

Jot down some of those memories and drop them off in the senior office next week.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
