Senior Center seeking tax-aide volunteer for 2008

Published Saturday, June 16, 2007

Dolores Saurer

The Senior Center has been involved with the volunteer tax preparation program for many years. We remember the days when all of the work was done by hand with the aid of a little calculator and we watched as technology developed to the point of exclusive use of computerized tax preparation and e-filing.

The tax-aide program is sponsored by Otter Tail/Wadena Community Action Council, IRS, AARP and Minnesota Department of Revenue. It is well-grounded and will continue but a volunteer technology person is now needed to assist in the Fergus Falls and New York Mills areas during the next tax season.

Computer knowledge sufficient to install software, connect equipment and do simple trouble-shooting work is necessary. This volunteer position supports tax preparation volunteers with their computer skills. Please call 218-739-0780 for more information about becoming a volunteer for this position.

Two weeks ago, we talked about the Thursday night summer Concerts in the Park. The first one is scheduled for next Thursday in Roosevelt Park at 5 p.m. Music will be provided by the Scandinavian Fiddle and Folk Group.

The Underwood Lions will be serving their very special pork chops, the proceeds of which go toward the support of the Senior Citizens Program Activity Fund. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a relaxing evening.

Next Tuesday at 11:30 a.m., Sherry Bruchner, an attorney with Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota, will be at the Senior Center for a seminar on "Seniors and Debt Collection." What are your rights and responsibilities with reference to debt collection?

Attorney Jay Cichosz, with the Nycklemoe Law Firm, will again be at the Center on June 27. Appointments for a free consultation will be scheduled starting at 1 p.m. Call 736-6842.

Earlier this week, there were two or three seats available for the following trips:

• Woodtick Theater, Akeley - June 27

• Jasper's Jubilee Theater, Park Rapids - July 19

Check this out in the Senior office.

Committees will be organized in the next two weeks. It is not necessary to be a board member to serve on a committee. Call or stop in the office for more information if interested.

Comments

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
