What is this?
Mandernach should give up her job
Published 12:00 p.m., June 22, 2007
Minnesota’s state health commissioner says she is sorry about withholding for months the news that cancer cases among Iron Range miners are far more common than previously believed. An apology, however, is not enough; Commissioner Dianne Mandernach ought to leave her job.
The state Health Department learned in early 2006 that 35 miners had been diagnosed with mesothelioma during the nine years leading up to 2005 – twice as many cases as in the previous nine year period. Rather than make that information public as quickly as possible – a move that seems only sensible since lives are obviously at stake – the health department stayed mum while planning additional research.
Now Mandernach has said that she is sorry for keeping the matter quiet. That is cold comfort for Minnesotans who for a year have worked in conditions more dangerous than they had realized.
