Mission is to promote independent lifestyles and enrich life of seniors

At least once a year, I try to include our mission statement in this column. The mission of the Fergus Falls Senior Citizens Program is "to enrich the lives and promote the independent lifestyles of the senior citizens of the Fergus Falls area."

Wednesday, we commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring our independence from Great Britain. Though this event is usually observed with picnics, parades and public celebrations, fireworks have only been a tradition since 1877.

It was not untill 1870, that the United States Congress made Independence Day a federal holiday. In observance of the holiday, the Senior Center will be closed and no noon meal will be served.

On Tuesday, July 3, Diane Duenow from Faith and Hope Funeral Home, will present a seminar on "Funerals and Pre-Planning."

The death of a loved one is never easy. Pre-planning a funeral can be very helpful to surviving family members.

For more information on this timely topic, attend this seminar at 11 a.m.

Another Concert in the Park at Roosevelt Park will be held on Thursday, the 5th, at 5 p.m. Sarah Winter and Friends will provide the entertainment but there will be no food vendor so why not plan an old-fashioned picnic with your favorite foods?

Those creative Red Hat gals have planned another fun experience for Thursday, July 12. Travel to Bug-a-Boo Bay overlooking beautiful Lake Le Homme Dieu in Alexandria for a Caribbean-style dinner.

Meet at 4:30 p.m. in the Senior Citizens parking lot to car-pool. Entertainment begins at 6 p.m.

Be sure to register in advance in the senior office if you plan to attend.

Don't forget — celebrate the 4th of July. Honor and pray for men and women in the service of our country and, of course, fly the flag.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
