'Tis the season for spelling bees and ours was held at the Senior Center on March 19 with five contestants vying for the championship.
The winners who received prizes of Fergus Bucks were Evelyn Oksness, first place; Marlys Klovstad, second place; and Joyce Quernemoen, third place. All spellers received certificates and little tack "bees" in appreciation of their participation.
Many thanks to our honorable judges: Shirley Dowzak with dictionary, Dorothy Donley and Mae Harthun. After the contest the victory celebration included coffee and a delicious treat provided by Mae.
Many of us are all too familiar with the pain of arthritis. But the question is to exercise or not to exercise. And the answer is yes — do exercise.
Kim Shea recently completed special training and will be leading an exercise class from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Thursday mornings for eight weeks, beginning April 5. Join her and learn about the benefits of exercise for those arthritic joints. There is no cost to participate.
Have a birthday in March? Don't forget the party next Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. Special entertainment for the occasion will be provided by Dr. Jim Buckley who will be playing your favorite melodies on the piano. Make a reservation and enjoy the noon meal featuring pork chops.
Attorney Jay Cichosz from the Nycklemoe Law Firm will be at the Senior Center at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28. If you wish a free consultation, call 736-6842 for an appointment.
Community Education is offering the four-hour Driver Improvement Refresher at the Area Learning Center from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27. Pay the $18 fee with registration at the Community Ed office (998-0544).
On Tuesday, April 3, Jackie Wenstrom, RN, from Lake Region Hospital will present information on stroke awareness. Learn the signs and symptoms. Awareness is the key to prompt treatment.
Finally, a little pause to ponder: "You can either complain that roses have thorns — or rejoice that thorn bushes have roses."

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Post a comment
