Perham hospital accredited by national group

Published Tuesday, March 27, 2007

Perham area residents can enjoy the peace of mind knowing that the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization which provides national standards for health care quality and safety, has awarded Perham Memorial Hospital (PMH) and Perham Memorial Home Care “The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval.”

Founded in 1951, the Joint Commission is focused on improving the safety and quality of health care through voluntary accreditation. The Joint Commission on-site survey of Perham Memorial Hospital and Home Care occurred in November 2006.

“The Joint Commission standards are above the minimum standards,” PMH Community Relations Director Sue VonRuden said. “We Invited them to come into our organization to see how we’re conducting business, and all aspects of health care. They’re very expensive to have come in, but we feel its important to assure our selves and our community of the best health care.”

The inspection was thorough, but revealing.

“It actually took quite a while to work through. They found two things. They were very minor issues. These were very easily fixable items that were done within a matter of a day.”

“We are doing (the certification) every three years,” Quality Control Director Mary Mayer said. “We had our Critical Access Hospital Certification (CAHC) in November.”

CAHC is a designation given to hospitals of 25 beds or less which are capable of providing a certain portion of required health care to the community.

“We will continue with that certification,” she said.

Perham Memorial Hospital and Home is a health care continuum owned by the Perham Hospital District, offering inpatient and outpatient hospital services, long-term care, home health care, chiropractic, emergency services, and a 28-unit senior congregate housing complex.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
