The annual meeting of the Fergus Falls Senior Citizens Program takes place on at 1 p.m. Friday, May 11. This includes the election of board members.

The terms of six board members expire this year: Melvin Bjone, Mae Harthun, Vivian Kugler, Don Pederson, John Sanchez and May Wiese. The board of directors accepted the resignation of Darlene Berge at the March meeting so someone will also be elected to fulfill two years of her term. There are five incumbents and three additional nominees vying for these seven positions: Mel Bjone, Mae Harthun, Vivian Kugler, Don Pederson, Loren Richards, Ruth Spidahl, Jim Tenneson and May Wiese.

In addition, nominations will be accepted from the floor during the meeting. Absentee ballots are allowed for members unable to attend the meeting but must be returned to the senior office by 1 p.m. May 11 to be counted.

No memberships will be sold on the day of the annual meeting and election. So if you wish to vote, your membership must be current prior to May 11.

We have a special workshop, "The Culture of Poverty," scheduled from 9:30 to11 a.m. Wednesday, May 23. Pat Anderson from Lakes Country Service Cooperative is the presenter. By attending this workshop, participants will receive information to better understand people who live in generational poverty.

Addressed will be the extent to which people go without resources, the hidden rules of class, family structure and how language can affect employment and life in general. It will also examine how government established poverty guidelines can affect how many people live.

Don't miss the opportunity to attend this workshop. There is no cost but registration is required by May 17.

At 1 p.m. on May 15 our Adopt-a-Class, third grade students of Lynette Ringquist at Adams School, will make their final visit to the Senior Center for the year. May baskets will be exchanged and the students will share a school project with their senior friends.

Seniors are asked to make it a point to attend this final gathering and wish the students success as they continue their education.

Looking ahead, you may wish to register for Senior Surf with Mary Jane Hay at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22. Attorney Jay Cichosz will be at the Center for individual consultation on May 23. Call 736-682 for an appointment.

Have you ever felt like you were at the end of your rope? Franklin D. Roosevelt suggested, when this happens, to "Tie a knot in the end and hang on."

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
