5 incumbents return to Senior Citizens board

Published Saturday, May 19, 2007

At the annual meeting of the Fergus Falls Senior Citizens Program last Friday, two new members and five incumbents were elected to the board of directors.

Loren Richards, Jim Tenneson, Mel Bjone, Vivian Kugler, Don Pederson and May Wiese will serve three-year terms and Mae Harthun, a two-year term.

Immediately following the annual meeting, an organizational meeting was held at which time the following officers were re-elected by unanimous ballot: Dolores Saurer, president; Mel Bjone, vice president; Dorothy Donley, secretary; Ed Zahler, treasurer.

As previously announced, we have no trip scheduled for May, however, on June 17, we go to Akeley for the Woodtick Theater. This is one of those old-time, foot-stompin' shows full of laughter and fun.

And the good news is, there are still quite a few seats available for this trip. Cost which includes transportation and the show is $27 for members and $32 for non-members.

Come Thursday, July 19, we have reservations for Jasper's Jubilee Theater in Park Rapids. This has been described as "the finest live music, magic and comedy show this side of Branson."

The bus will leave Fergus Falls at 10 a.m. and a lunch stop will be made enroute. Show-tme is 1:45 p.m. After the show, on the way home, we will stop at the Cactus in Perham for a buffet supper of Swedish meatballs and broasted chicken with all the trimmings.

Cost for this trip is $42 for members ($47 non-members). This includes transportation, show ticket and supper. Please register in the senior office by June 22.

Looking at next week, May birthdays will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 22. Join the party at 11:30 a.m.

Make an advance reservation and enjoy the noon meal afterward which features pork roast.

A reminder that Senior Surf with Mary Jane Hay is also scheduled for this date at 1 p.m.

The eight-hour Driver Improvement Program will be offered by Community Education on May 21 and 23 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Area Learning Center.

Since this is the full course, you must attend both sessions of classroom instruction. Completion will allow a 10 percent discount on your auto insurance for a three year period if you are a Minnesota resident, age 55 or older.

Cost is $20, payable in the Community Education office. Phone 998-0544, Ext. 1600.

Please continue to save your SunMart grocery receipts for the Senior Center. Our goal is $150,000 which, when reached, translates into a bonus of $1,000 for the Center. To date, we have almost $116,150 so we only need $33,850. We appreciate your help.

If you haven't picked up the April issue of "The Golden Page," your copy awaits you in the office. Members receive one copy free — addtional copies are 25 cents each.

Since last Sunday was Mothers' Day, it seems appropriate to include this quotation attributed to Abraham Lincoln: "All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother."

Dolores Saurer is the president of the Senior Citizens Program.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
