Monday is Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day.
Though it was first celebrated as a day of remembering those who died in our nation's service, it has since become a day of remembrance of all of our friends and relatives who have passed on and whom we wish to honor by decorating their graves with flowers. In observance of the holiday, the Senior Center will be closed on the 28th.
On Tuesday, June 5, at 11:30 a.m., Jackie Wenstrom, RN, from Lake Region Hospital will present a "Stroke Awareness" seminar.
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and the number one cause of adult disability.
Fortunately, 80 percent of strokes are considered preventable and early treatment, or course, is crucial to recovery.

Once again, Community Education is offering the 8-hour Driver Improvement class at the Area Learning Center. The dates are June 6 and 7 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. (both days).
With completion of the class, you are eligible for a 10 percent discount on your auto insurance for a three-year period if you are a Minnesota resident, aged 55 or older.
Register and pay the $20 fee at the Community Ed office. Phone 998-0544, Ext. 1600
With all the rain we have been having and with the anticipation of some sunshine eventually, there's a good chance we will soon be bombarded by mosquitoes.
I received an e-mail yesterday with a few suggestions that might possibly be helpful (maybe).
'Tis said, Bounce fabric softener sheets are goodµ — Wipe on and go! From a woodsman--try Vick's Vaporub. A "tough guy" Marine suggested Avon's "Skin-so-Soft" bath oil mixed half and half with alcohol.
Finally, plant marigolds around the yard because they have a fragrance which seems to deter bugs (and they have pretty flowers too).
Good Luck! Let me know which ones work.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Post a comment
