Richville man dies in truck accident

Published 12:00 p.m., May 29, 2007

Sundberg Apiaries is mourning a long-time employee who died Thursday in an accident near Scott City, Mo., hauling back the last load of bees for the season.

Alan Hunter, 37, Richville, was returning from Mississippi, driving a tractor-trailer with 360 colonies of bees, each containing about 25,000 bees. While northbound on Interstate 55 south of Scott City, Hunter’s semi swiped the guardrail of a bridge and went off the road several hundred feet before overturning in a field, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Hunter was pronounced dead at the scene.

“This has really thrown us into a tailspin,” said Mark Sundberg, Sundberg Apiaries owner. Hunter had worked for Sundberg Apiaries for 16 years. “He was a good friend to all of us. He was a real hard worker and definitely a family man. He was a guy you could count on to get the job done.”

The accident’s cause is unknown.

“He either fell asleep or became distracted,” said Trooper Aaron Harrison, who responded to the scene.

The large number of bees at the scene presented a challenge to rescue workers.

“They weren’t prepared to handle bees,” Sundberg said. “So they had to call in local beekeepers. They were able to save most of them.”
