Alex Welgraven has been nominated as a semi-finalist in the Film Your Issue 2007 International Film Competition.

Alex Welgraven, 19, of Fergus Falls, has been selected as a semi-finalist for a major international film competition for young people, Film Your Issue (FYI) 2007. An online voting platform on Yahoo! will end May 31 and will decide the winners for the next round. Locals are encouraged to vote online for the semi-finalist from their area or their favorite film.

Welgraven’s film, “Move Your Feet,” is one of 36 entries from around the globe from young adults 16 to 25 to be selected.

“I love film because of its ability to inspire people to act,” Welgraven said. “I chose to make this film because the world suffers from inaction. It is inaction that destroys the world.”

Welgraven is currently finishing his two-year degree at Minnesota State Community and Technical College-Fergus Falls. Next fall, he will be transferring to Minnesota State University, Moorhead, to major in film, with an emphasis in production.

“I've lived in Fergus Falls for the last couple of years, and my time here has a great deal of influence on my interest in film,” he said. “PEG Access Television made the equipment available with discounted memberships for students like myself. I owe a great deal to this facility.”

Aside from local equipment, Welgraven used the talents of local actors as well.

“I have to thank my actor and best friend, David Andersen, for allowing me to cast him in my film. Without his willingness to let me boss him around in the cold weather, I wouldn't be a semi-finalist in this contest.”

Film Your Issue is an Internet-based global competition, sponsored by some of the leading global-media companies and cause organizations including Yahoo!, Jumpcut, USA TODAY, Starz, Universal Pictures, The United Nations Department of Public Information (UNDPI), The Humane Society of the United States, The Natural Resources Defense Council and ASCAP.

Voting by the public and VIP Jury began May 18, and continues until midnight, May 31 on Jumpcut, a Yahoo! company. To access and vote, visit www.filmyourissue.com.

Yahoo! Audience Awards will be given to the top-voted U.S. and foreign entries. A special award will be given by UNDPI for the best film on UN issues, such as peace, tolerance and international migration. Three FYI winners will be selected by the VIP Jury, which includes CNN News Anchor Wolf Blitzer, legendary newsman Walter Cronkite, NBC News Manager Brian Williams, and “Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson, among others. Now in its third year, the FYI competition was launched in January 2007 at Sundance. The U.S. Winners will attend an Awards Ceremony at the United Nations headquarters in New York City on June 26th, 2007. Winning films will be broadcast on Starz, Starz Cinema and Starz Edge.
