SHIP counselor helps seniors sort through health care options

The air waves are buzzing as seniors discuss and consider options available with reference to Medicare and other health insurance.

If this dilemma is creating a problem for you, you may wish to seek additional information and assistance from a State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) counselor.

Trained SHIP counselors will be at the Senior Center between Nov. 15 and Dec. 31, to provide needed information as you evaluate and enroll in the best plan for you.

Lyle Hoxtell, Otter Tail County Coordinator on Aging, will also present a seminar on Nov. 20, at which time he will explain Medicare, Part D and the next enrollment period. After Lyle's presentation, trained counselors will be available to assist.

Please register (736-6842) to attend this seminar.

A couple of reminders for this coming week:

• Tuesday — Crime Update Seminar at 11:30 a.m. with Chief of Police Tim Brennan.

• Thursday — Falls Assessment from 11:15 a.m. to noon.

On Monday, the 5th, Dave Bulik will offer the Defensive Driving Refresher Course from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the National Guard Armory. Register by calling 736-6842 before 9 a.m. on the 5th if you wish to attend.

The $15 fee will be collected in class.

The eight-hour 55-Alive course is a prerequisite to taking this Refresher.

In observance of Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 12, the Senior Center will be closed, however, there will be a noon meal featuring chicken breast.

Come to the Center on the 13th and be treated to the music of the aChord singers, accompanied by Sylvia Nygaard, at 11 a.m. Make a reservation and enjoy the baked ham dinner afterward.

John Armstrong will again be at the Center for free ear wax check and hearing aid cleaning at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the 14th. Call 736-6842 for an appointment.

The Red Hats will have their monthly breakfast at Debbie's Restaurant at 9:30 a.m. on the 15th. Please register in the Senior office if you plan to attend.

Dancing is considered an ideal activity for seniors because it involves physical activity, strengthens the body and is mentally challenging which boosts the immune system.

All of that plus it is fun, so how about joining the senior dancers at the VFW every Friday for dinner at 5:30 p.m. followed by dancing at 7:30 p.m.

Every once in awhile someone comes up with a new definition for "friends." I like this one: "Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly!" —Anonymous

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
