Elbow Lake man killed while hunting
Craig Rupp was Grant County commissioner
Published 10:53 a.m., November 5, 2007
A Grant County supervisor is dead following a Saturday hunting accident.
Craig Rupp, 60, died Saturday at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls after being shot in the chest shortly after 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
The 60-year-old Elbow Lake man died from a gunshot wound suffered while posting on a deer drive, according to Grant County Sheriff Dwight Walvatne. He was with several other hunters southeast of Elbow Lake when the accident happened at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Walvatne said.
Elbow Lake Rescue and ELEAH Ambulance were called to the scene at 9:41 a.m. Saturday, Walvatne said. He was transported by ambulance to Lake Region Hospital, where he died.
Authorities said he was shot while others in his hunting party flushed deer out of tall grass. A deer jumped up and shots were fired. One of those shots hit Rupp, authorities said.
A former Elbow Lake city council member, Rupp was currently serving on the Grant County board of supervisors, representing District 4, which includes Elbow Lake. He was elected in the 2006 fall election and took office in January 2007, according to Grant County Auditor Chad Van Santen.
Rupp leaves behind a wife and two grown children, Walvatne said.
A 1965 graduate of Elbow Lake High School, Rupp had worked for the Mendelson Egg Company the past 38 years.
An avid baseball fan, Rupp collected baseball cards, memerablia and attended a Minnesota Twins fantasy camp in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. In describing the camp experience to The Daily Journal in a July 2007 story, Rupp compared the camp to another one of his loves — deer hunting.
“Others who share the baseball passion that I do understand what attending a fantasy camp really means,” Rupp said. “It might be similar to deer hunting. Only those who share the bond of hunting in the wild each November can fully understand the feeling,” Rupp had told The Journal.
Rupp was with some of his closest friends Saturday enjoying that special bond of hunting when he was shot and eventually died.
The accident was one of two reported statewide during the opening weekend of Minnesota’s 2007 deer hunting season.

The Elbow Lake "coffee round table" participants will miss Craig Rupp. His ability to converse at "ANY" level was so inviting and stimulating. For some of us have "walked this sad walk", to his family and dear friends hang on to those memories. A tragidy like this has NO winner, all involved will suffer at some level. The Elbow Lake community must provide support to his family and friends now and for the future.

Craig I thank you for all the good times we shared in softball. Me as an umpire and you as the pitcher and strength of the Black Sheep. I will always remember Flekka Fest tournament that you and Kim Olson invited me to be your chief umpire. When I missed a call you were a gentleman and gave me your opinion and then went back to playing the game you loved so much and didn't let my mistake affect your game. All the younger ball players could take lessons from you on how to deal with mistakes by others. I thank the good Lord for allowing me to come into your life and have a true friend for life. I will make a batch of Glug to share with the Black Sheep in your honor. Thank You again for letting me be a small part in your life.

Craig,
We will all miss you. You were a good family man, took very good care of your wife, kids, and grandkids. I am very sad, but also think it is kind of neat, that you were doing something like hunting or fishing. Enjoying life to the fullest. Thanks for the opportunity to have met you.
God bless you and your family.

Craig was always good to me. He would come into the local baseball card shop in Fargo and we would play cribbage for hours. Craig would come to Fargo for meetings and also to catch the latest movie that was out.
