Coleman deserves thanks for support of sugarbeets

Published Wednesday, November 21, 2007

Many thanks to Sen. Norm Coleman for his continued support of another homegrown solution to our nation’s dependence on foreign oil.

The sugarbeet industry is crucial to Minnesota and with the jobs provided by the industry more than two billion is added to Minnesota’s economy. The new farm bill now includes a sugar ethanol program that will help to further diversify our supply of biofuels.

Coleman once received criticism for his support of sugar ethanol programs. Al Franken told the Bemidji Pioneer in July that “sugarbeets don’t work for ethanol.” But Coleman stood firmly behind a crop that will not only benefit Minnesota’s farmers and our economy but also our environment. Sen. Coleman’s search of new ways to utilize homegrown energy sources rather than depending on foreign fuel supplies is an excellent example of the type of foresight we need in today’s world.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

I think we already hit the bottom with Jesse Ventura.

Anyone who thinks it is a good idea to give sugar beat growers any kind of subsidy is totally crazy. Sure it creates jobs, but so do a lot of other companies. The only difference is that most companies don't need semi's to haul their windfall profits home, really people who make millions don't need subsidies!!!

No, No, Buck:
That would be the dork by the name of Al Quie. He was the piece of work that was governor from 1979-1983. Back when home mortgage rates were 13-14% and the Prime was about 18%. First he was a State senator, Congressman, then finished it off being Governor. He was going to block free tuition in our tech schools for veterans of the military. We took a bus from our HTC to the Capitol to protest. It passd, as Cousin Ronnie went to a tech 2 years later and was suprised that his tuition was free.

If anyone want to see where the bottom really is just wait until the debates between Franken and Coleman.
Al Franken will mop the floor with Coleman. Coleman will wish he never got out of bed.

"If the people of Minnesota put him in office they have finally hit the bottom of the barrel."

So, Jerry, I'm curious. First, I apologize for being snide, but... This is at least the second time you've made this comment in regards to Franken. Is this because one of your conservative radio hosts keep saying it, and thus it's stuck in your head, or was this an actual original political thought that was so memorable simply because it actually didn't come from such a source?

And Franken is a "know-nothing"? This can only be claimed by someone who has never listened to, or read anything written by, Franken. Disagree if you must, but Franken is certainly not a "know-nothing."

All of us sugarbeets say thank you Norm Coleman, but we are still going to vote for Al Franken!
