As I'm writing this column, the weather seems to be flirting with a few snow flurries. I suppose it's inevitable but I'm still voting for a delay on the snow stuff for a couple more weeks — at least. It probably wouldn't hurt to check on where we put the boots and mittens last spring, though, so we're ready when they are needed.
Last week I offered a few suggestions to help with the Christmas gift list and missed a few. Unique to the Senior Center are the beautiful hand-made quilts. Not only do we have them for your bed, but there are lovely little crib quilts and lap quilts as well. Rag rugs right off the loom are also available.
Next Tuesday at 11:30 a.m., it is birthday party time for our members born in November. Come help them celebrate and wish them a happy day. Make a reservation and stay for the noon meal featuring meatloaf too.
Community Education is offering the full eight-hour driver improvement course on Nov. 28 and 29 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Area Learning Center. Completion of the class, if you are a Minnesota resident, age 55 or older, allows a 10 percent discount on your auto insurance for a three-year period. Register and pay the $20 fee in the Community Ed office. Phone 998-0544, Ext. 1600.
If you are a cell phone user, there is a good chance that you may have one or two old used ones lying around collecting dust. Did you know that they are recyclable? The National Council on Aging is collecting them with the profits to be used to help provide meals on wheels, care-giving support, health promotion activities and life-long learning. It is not necessary to have the battery chargers and other accessories — just the phones. Drop them off in the Senior office.
We were a little late with the October issue of the “Golden Page,” but it is now waiting to be picked up. There is one free copy for each member. Additional copies are 25 cents each. Variety there is — in this issue. Some poems, some information, some stories, a couple of recipes and there's always a few laughs.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Post a comment
