Operate snowmobiles safely this winter

Published Tuesday, November 27, 2007

With yet another Minnesota winter fast approaching, the Otter Country Trail Association would like to remind all snowmobilers in the area to make sure they operate their machine safely once the trails open.

Providing there is sufficient snow to do so, snowmobile trails will open statewide on December 1st. Of the 20,000 miles of snowmobile trails in Minnesota, approximately 60% is on privately owned land that the land owner has graciously opened for snowmobile use. That means snowmobiling is a privilege, not a right. We encourage youto stay on the marked trails no matter where you ride. Our club is responsible for aproximately 170 miles of this trail system.

Putting in these trails takes time and money. The time is donated by club members, while the money comes from snowmobile registrations, a portion of the non-road gas tax attributed to snowmobile use, and for the third year from the snowmobile trail pass. If you plan on riding this year make sure both your registration and trail pass are up-to-date.

We encourage any snowmobiler who would like more information about snowmobiling in general or snowmobiling in this area in particular to get in touch. Contact us at 218-770-3167.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

Be respectful and stay off peoples property unless you have permission to do so. Thanks!
