Wellness issues tapped at expo
Published Monday, October 29, 2007
The Bigwood Event Center looked like a busy shopping center on a Saturday with women from around the area attending the first Women’s Wellness Expo, sponsored by the Fergus Falls Business and Professional Women.
The event offered health and wellness seminars and the Women's Marketplace, consisting of 25+ vendors showcasing their health and wellness products or services to women of all ages.
“It’s been a fun event to put together” Organizer Katy Olson said. “We get to interface with a lot of people interested in health and wellness and we feel it is important to connect people with health options.”
According to Olson, while healthcare is not just a concern for women, more often than not, women play the role of facilitator of health and wellness in the family.
By and large, women are more active in seeking out answers. The philosophy and purpose of the expo was to provide those answers.
“What we do is educate the women in your life and they come home and educate you,” she said.
The promotion and education of health and wellness to women, while having a local flair this past weekend, is an increasing movement nationwide.
According to the White House website, the First Lady has made wellness education something she champions.
“As a wife and mother, Mrs. Bush recognizes the urgency for women to make a commitment to a lifestyle that promotes lifelong health, not only for every woman's own benefit but also for the benefit of family and loved ones.”
The Expo featured speakers Dr. Ala Lysyk Smith, a Fergus Falls chiropractor and Dr. Alison Danby, a Naturopathic doctor from Alexandria, while the range of options from participating vendors covered the whole spectrum for improving your health, from exercise to diet to Tae Kwon Do.
“Every aspect of health is covered in that room,” Olson said. “We’re very pleased with the turnout.”
With about 150 women attending Saturday’s event, it is likely there will be another expo next year, she said.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by Josephine (anonymous) on October 29, 2007 at 5:55 p.m. (Suggest removal)
As a member of FFBPW I want to thank everyone for the wonderful job that was done on our Health Expo. I heard many great comments about it over the weekend. I'm proud to be a member of such a great group of women and the heart speaker from U of M was really an eye opener.
