September has been designated as National Senior Center Month and with a theme of "Senior Centers Work." Our calendar is jam-packed with activities and entertainment.
Every Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., representatives from a variety of area resources for seniors will be at the Senior Center.
Scheduled for the next two weeks, we have "Housing Options," on Sept. 5, in which information will be provided on assisted living, adult foster care and nursing homes.
Then on the Sept. 12, the topic is "Social Options," which includes information on available supportive services such as Fergus Chore Corps, Senior Companion Program, respite and more.
Entertainment always rates very high at the Center and we have lined up special programs from 11 a.m. to noon. Coming up next week on Tuesday, it's the Scandinavian Melodies and on Thursday, it's Jim Larsen and his accordion.
The following week, enjoy the songs of Marjorie Hanson on Sept. 11, and Larry Fyhrie and his concertina on Sept. 13.
The Red Hat gals are planning for several activities on Sept. 6, beginning with the music of Jim Larsen at 11 a.m., followed by lunch (pork ribs) at the Senior Center at noon.
Then at 12:30 p.m., they'll take the downtown historic walking tour, after which it's back to the Center for donuts with Jeannie.
Cost for the walking tour is $4 and lunch is $3.25. Sign up in the Senior office for both by Sept. 5.
John Armstrong will be at the Center at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 12, to provide a free ear wax check and hearing aid cleaning. Call for an appointment (736-6842).
An appointment is also required for a free consultation with Attorney Jay Cichosz who will be at the Center at 1 p.m. Sept. 26.
From 9 a.m. to noon, on Thursday, Sept. 27, Todd Johnson, Lake Region Healthcare Pharmacy, will offer free medication assessments at the Senior Center — by appointment only.
There are also two forms to fill out and these can be picked up at the Center. Call 736-6842 to register by Sept. 25.
Have you registered for the self-help program at the Senior Center for people with arthritis? Deadline for sign-up is Sept. 6, and classes begin Sept. 10.
Tax-aid volunteers are desperately needed for the 2008 Tax Aid Program. If you like working with people, figures and have a friendly relationship with your computer, check this one out. Contact Darrell Strand at 736-7042 for more information.
I don't know where the summer went, but Monday is Labor Day. The Senior Center will be closed and there will be no noon meal served. But don't forget there will be a noon potluck at Roosevelt Park.
Y'all come and bring a side dish for barbecues.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Post a comment
