Senior Center seeks members during annual drive

The first day of autumn brought us a couple of perfect summer days, but we know those days are numbered. Autumn is, however, without a doubt, one of the more beautiful times of the year--the falling leaves, the gorgeous colors, the crisp cool air. What more could you ask for?

As in past years, our membership drive for the Senior Citizens Program begins in October. The cost of membership remains the same, only $12 a year.

Membership includes a monthly newsletter, a free copy of the quarterly Golden Page, free notary service, voting privileges, discounted bus rides to and from the Senior Center and reduced prices on some activities.

If you are a new member and join in October, the remaining three months in 2007 are included in your 2008 membership.

If you have friends or neighbors who are 55 or older, bring them along on your next trip to the Senior Center. Let's all get acquainted.

Perhaps you have heard of the Driver Improvement Program and if you have recently turned 55 and are a Minnesota resident, you may be considering taking the eight-hour class, completion of which allows a 10 percent discount on your auto insurance for a three year period.

The Community Education office is offering this class at the Area Learning Center on Oct. 9 and 11 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Cost is $20, payable with registration in the Community Education office. Phone 998-0544, Ext. 1600.

If you have previously completed the full course and are due for the four-hour Refresher, this, too, is available at the Area Learning Center on Oct. 5 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Cost is $18 with registration.

The Red Hat gals have October plans for supper at Perkins on the 8th at 5:30 p.m. After supper, it's off to the middle school for the "Brass in Blue" concert (U.S. Air Force Ensemble) at 7 p.m.

And if you are one of the first 13 to sign up in the senior office for this outing, you get a free ticket to the concert.

Our last trips of the year: Chanhassen - "Les Miserables" - Oct. 17; and Brainerd - "Geritol Frolics" - Oct. 26, are both filled but there is a waiting list in the event of cancellations. Check on this at 736-6842.

Last Monday, the rains came — but a little rain didn't stop our hungry friends from enjoying the pancakes and sausages at the Senior Center. Thanks to all of you.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
