Janet Knapp, left, and Desta Hunt display vintage hats and pincushion hat centerpieces that will be part of the fun during the Thursday, April 10, “Hats Off to You” salad luncheon at The Federated Church, Fergus Falls.
Fellowship and raising money for three good causes will be part of this year’s “Hats Off to You” salad luncheon and bake sale scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at The Federated Church, Fergus Falls.
Proceeds from the salad luncheon, bake sale and a silent auction of 18 pin cushion hat centerpieces will be split evenly among Someplace Safe, the Fergus Falls Salvation Army and Fergus Falls Food Shelf.
On Wednesday chairperson Janet Knapp and committee member Desta Hunt were at work in the church basement planning for next week’s event.
“Janet made all of the 18 pin cushion hat centerpieces,” Hunt said. “They’re absolutely magnificent.”
Raffle tickets for a quilt drawing will be sold, with the drawing to be held Sept. 7. Proceeds will go to The Federated Church Youth Mission. Knapp designed, appliquéd and pieced the quilt. The actual quilting was completed by Rosalie Davenport.
At least 30 people will volunteer to help out on April 10, helping as waiters and waitresses, working in the kitchen, helping with the bake sale, raffle sale and working with cleanup after the event is completed
“I plan to wear a Greta Garbo hat from the 1930s,” Hunt said, since we have a hat theme this year. It should be as fun day.”
Wearing a hat to attend is not required, but totally optional.
“It takes a lot of planning for this annual salad luncheon,” Knapp said. “In November a group of six of us started to meet. Since then we’ve been meeting the first Thursday of each month at 11 a.m. here at Federated Church,” Knapp said.
Others doing the planning, in addition to Knapp and Hunt, are Arlene Worner, Jan Nelson, Bonnie Bergerud, Jane Nelson (publicity) and Carol and Debbie Rose (bake sale).
This event started about 30 years ago by the Women’s Fellowship group at The Federated Church. Historically, the salad luncheon was always held close to St. Patrick’s Day.
“But given the large number of snowbirds, it’s been held a little later in recent years,” Knapp said. “Soup and sandwich events have been held in the fall.”
Both Knapp and Hunt appreciate the help they’re receiving from fellow volunteers. Fellow members of the congregation are spreading the word with the Hats Off to You theme.
