Last Monday we held our annual senior citizens spelling bee at the Center. Congratulations are in order to our winners: (1) Marlys Larson, (2) May Wiese and (3) Marlys Klovstad.

Everyone who participated received a Certificate of Participation and a little "bee" pin. Those in the winners' circle also received Certificates plus prizes of Fergus Bucks.

Special thanks are due our honorable judges: Shirley Dowzak with dictionary, Dorothy Donley and Mae Harthun. And thanks too to Mae Harthun for the delicious refreshments enjoyed by all.

Scheduled for next week, there will be an opportunity for ear wax check and hearing aid cleaning with John Armstrong at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday. This is a free service but call 736-6842 for an appointment.

Thursday is Red Hat breakfast at Debbie's Kitchen st 9:30 a.m. Be sure to register in the Senior Office if you plan to attend.

On Friday, Community Education will be offering the four-hour Defensive Driving Refresher class from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Fergus Falls Public Library. Register and pay the $18 fee in the Community Ed office.

The following week, on Tuesday, the 15th, our Adopt-a-Class, third graders from Lynette Ringquist's class at Cleveland School, will visit the Senior Center for the last time this school year for special activities with the seniors.

Wednesday, Attorney Jamison Cichosz will present a seminar on Patients Bill of Rights at 11:30 a.m. It is important to know and understand these rights especially for people in assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Please make a reservation in advance if you plan to stay for the noon meal featuring lasagna.

Thursday we have an opportunity to listen to the River Bend Kitchen Band at 11:30 a.m. and Friday, it's our own Senior Citizens Kitchen Band. If you plan to stay for the noon meal of Polish sausage or pork on either Thursday or Friday respectively, be sure to make advance reservations.

"Ask the Attorney" with Jamison Cichosz is scheduled for April 23. Free consultations regarding pertinent legal questions may be set up by calling 736-6842.

The annual volunteer recognition program will be held on Monday, April 28, at 1 p.m. Volunteers are special, needed and appreciated. We thank you and cherish your important contributions to our Senior Center.

Finally, mark your calendar for Friday, May 9. Our annnual meeting which includes election of board members begins at 1 p.m.

And a bit of trivia — If you are a baseball fan, you're probably aware that it's that time again, but did you know that baseball's anthem, "Take Me Out To The Ballgame," is celebrating it's 100th anniversary this year?

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
