Bull riding not for cowboys anymore
Red Horse Arena to host event on April 18-19

Eight seconds may not seem like a long time to the average person. But to the bull rider, eight seconds can mean the difference between failure and success.
Red Horse Ranch Arena will host dozens of these riders April 18 and 19 when it presents its second annual “8 Second Challenge.” Both nights will include not only bull riding, but barrel racing, rodeo clowns, a dance featuring the Silverados and possibly a mechanical bull.
“As far as rodeo sports, bull riding is always the last event because it’s the most thrilling to watch,” said Candy Olson, events coordinator at the Red Horse Ranch Arena. “It’s a talent. It’s just like any professional event you get into.”
Next weekend’s event will bring bull riders from as far away as Arkansas — nothing new for the Red Horse Ranch Arena.
“This arena is amazing,” Olson said. “I’ve had riders from Texas in different events that have come all the way (to compete here).”
The 8 Second Challenge will include 32 bull riders each night. Bull riders will attempt to stay on the animal for eight seconds using only one hand; the free hand must not touch the rider or the bull. Riders are scored on a 100-point scale, with a perfect score a rarity. The event will be hosted by professional rodeo announcer Kelly Kenney.
Organizers stress bull riding is not just for cowboys but an event to be enjoyed by all.
Following the 8 Second Challenge will be a women’s barrel racing competition featuring 12 riders each night.
Tickets for the 8 Second Challenge are now on sale at BJ’s, Olson Oil or at the door of the Red Horse Ranch, located on Highway 10 in Fergus Falls. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for children ages 6-12; kids 5 and under are free. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be followed by the dance. All events will be held indoors.
