Jared Huwe of New York Mills is a local bull rider competing in this weekend’s 8 Second Challenge at Red Horse Ranch Arena in rural Fergus Falls.

Jared Huwe was 14 years old the day he rode his first bull, though as he puts it, he “ate the dirt pretty quick.”

How things have changed. In the 10 years since his initial ride, Huwe has made multiple trips to the Minnesota Rodeo Association Finals, the Great Lakes Circuit Finals Rodeo and the National Federation of Professional Bull Riders Finals, collecting trophies, buckles and saddles along the way.

This weekend the New York Mills native will be sticking closer to home as he competes in the second annual 8 Second Challenge at the Red Horse Ranch Arena in rural Fergus Falls.

One of 32 bull riders competing both Friday and Saturday nights, Huwe is the only participant from Otter Tail County.

“I love when it’s this close,” he said of the competition. “It’s actually a pretty good size show they put on. They’ve actually got cowboys coming from Arkansas.”

Usually it’s Huwe who’s headed elsewhere for a show. When he’s not farming in New York Mills, he’s making the weekend rodeo rounds with a group of fellow riders from Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Those trips have taken Huwe to 20 states, entailing as much as 14 hours of drive time for a single competition. He estimates he’s ridden roughly 45 bulls already this year.

Yet it’s not the animals that keeps Huwe attending contest after contest.

“A lot of it is people — you’re not going to find a better group of people, really,” he said. “I travel with a group of three to four guys and we cheer each other on and we compete against each other.”

Huwe says watching bull riding as a kid inspired his interest in the activity. He took his first ride at a Little Britches Rodeo and attended a bull riding school in Detroit Lakes a couple of years later.

“Everybody in the sport’s really good about helping out new people,” he said.

This weekend’s 8 Second Challenge at Red Horse Ranch Arena is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. both tonight and Saturday. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for children ages 6-12, while ages 5 and under are free.

Both nights will also include women’s barrel racing, featuring local competitors Danna and Justine Botner.

A dance featuring the Silverados will follow the races.
