Warriors blank Comets

Published Tuesday, April 22, 2008

The Hillcrest Comets ran into Sam Thielen’s two-hit gem Monday as they fell to Wheaton 6-0 in a Pheasant Conference game at Legion Field.

Thielen struck out 10 and walked just two in chilly April conditions.

Tim Erickson matched Thielen’s shutout for the first two innings but the Warriors pushed four unearned runs across in the third as Jake Poole led off with a single and moved up on a groundout. Thielen was hit by a pitch and Poole scored on an error. Thielen came home on an overthrow. Mason Lampe then delivered a two-run single that brought home Ryan Schwagel and Jay Nelson.

Wheaton scored two more runs in the fifth as Lampe reached on an error, moved up on a walk to Lampe, and scored on a single by Zach Fridgen. Lampe scored from third when a pick-off throw rolled into leftfield.

“Tim pitched a very nice game for us, mixing his pitches and keeping their hitters off balance,” said Hillcrest head coach Steve Undseth. “He deserved better support in the field.”

Jamie Stedjan singled and Nolan Erickson doubled for Hillcrest’s lone hits.

The Comets, now 0-3, will travel to Graceville Tuesday. Wheaton is 2-0.
