Area athletes record 14 firsts in K.T. Smith

BRECKENRIDGE – Fourteen area individuals and relay teams claimed firsts Thursday in the K.T. Smith Invitational.
On the girls’ side, Kendra Coleman won the 100 hurdles for Pelican Rapids with a 17.26 and second in the triple jump with a 30-11.75. The Vikes also won the 4x800 relay with a time of 11:03.37. Maria Kunz and Kristin Westby were second in the high jump and 3,200 respectively. Kunz went 4-8 while Westby turned in a 13:12.10.
Hillcrest freshman Rhoda Christenson set the winning pace in the 1,600 with a 5:58.42. She was also second in the 800 with a 2:47.99. Hillcrest’s Cari Jo Hohncke took the triple jump with a 31-4.75. Hohncke was second in the long jump with a 14-0.5.
West Central Area’s Krystal Lacey claimed the discus with a toss of 114-6. Teammate Hillary Anderson ran the winning time of 13:02 in the 3,200.
Holly Sheets of Perham won the 800 with a 2:38. The Yellowjackets also took first in the 4x400 relay with a 4:43.63. Becca Peloquin earned a runner-up finish in the 100 hurdles with a 17.43.
Barnesville-Rothsay earned a runner-up finish in the girls' 4x200 relay with a time of 1:59.55.
West Central Area’s Derek Bredy was a double winner in the boys’ competition. Bredy went 20-8.50 in the long jump and 47-5 in the triple. Bredy also finished second in the 200 with a 23.14 and second in the 100 dash with an 11.19. WCA’s Dale Haberer took second in the high jump with a 5-10 effort.
The Perham boys took runner-up honors with four firsts. Jacob Hunter ran the 300 hurdles in 43.95, Tristan Covington ran a 2:08.16 in the 800 and Keith Schornack edged teammate Alex Barney in the 3,200 with a 10:51.24. The Yellowjackets also won the 4x400 relay with a 3:54.76. Hunter was second in the 110 hurdles with a 15.92. Perham’s 4x200 relay team took second with a 1:41.79.
The Pelican Rapids boys’ team placed second in three events. Lance Erickson and Dan Wood were runner-up finishers in the shot put and discus respectively with tosses of 114-5.5 and 42-9. The Vikes also placed in all four relay events and posted a second place finish of 3:58.46 in the 4x400 with the team of Matt Haugen, Omar Zavala, Andy Mackner and Aaron Haugen.
Barnesville-Rothsay earned a runner-up finish in the boys' 4x100 relay with a time of 48.29 and the 4x800 with a 9:08.49.
The Breckenridge/Campbell-Tintah boys and girls both took top honors. The BCT boys racked up 100 points while the BCT girls scored 120. Perham took second in the boys’ competition with 95 points. Barnesville-Rothsay was third in the girls’ competition with 59 points.
