St. James Episcopal Church of Fergus Falls, in an effort to help support the community food shelf, will hold a chili supper from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the church that’s located on the south side of Lake Alice.

The price for adults is $6 and $3 for children.

”We have a small congregation, but one that’s very dedicated with caring

members,” said Cheryl Rose Proffit who is co-chair for Saturday’s chili supper. “Our members give much with their many talents and want to help people both locally and nationally.”

The chili supper had been scheduled for early December 2007. The event was held but, due to a snowstorm, very few people were able to attend. Saturday’s chili supper will be the first annual event, with others to follow.

The other co-chair, Cindy Thernell, said that the chili supper will help, in her words, “put St. James on the map again.”

She said that members of the church “are wonderful individuals who are wholeheartedly willing to contribute both their time and talent.”

Proffit and Thernell are co-chairs of the St. James Episcopal Church outreach/growth committee.

“Working together, we hope to keep adding events as part of church growth/outreach — and sharing the love of God,” Profitt said.

Previously, St. James Episcopal Church held a spaghetti supper, coordinated by the church youth group, with proceeds going to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. A rummage sale was sale held in 2006.

St. James offers support to the Matthew House in Fergus Falls, a place to help people get started again in life following substance abuse. Church members also support toys for children through the Salvation Army at Christmas and Food for the Poor.

Members of the congregation also have participated in the local MS walk to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Thernell and Proffit say that success, through outreach/growth efforts, will come about through the mission of St. James Episcopal Church that prides itself as “a caring family church.”

“We welcome all to worship with us, including those who are seekers or inquirers into Christian faith, or are committed Christians of long standing,” Profitt said. “We’re happy to answer questions about who we are and what we believe.”
