Bev’s Bakery, a provider of specialty cakes, breads and pastries in Battle Lake, has received strong affirmation for its tasty desserts. Earlier this month bakery owner Janet Schicker came home with three Awards of Excellence after showcasing several specialty cakes at the Upper Midwest Bakery Association show in Minneapolis.

This marks the second consecutive year that Bev’s Bakery has earned high honors at the show. Schicker entered this year’s competition with two Royal Icing novelty cakes, each winning silver medals, and one Fondant novelty cake that earned a bronze medal.

“We’re proud of our made-from-scratch reputation, which proved to be a winning recipe at the show in Minneapolis,” Schicker said. “The bakery is named after my mother who lives in Utah. She’s made everything from scratch over the years, and we continue to follow her lead.”

Schicker purchased the bakery in Battle Lake in 2005. She and her husband, Joe, had previously been in the resort business at Otter Tail Lake, starting in 1995. Janet was raised in California and Joe is a native of Nebraska.

She uses real ingredients at Bev’s Bakery, from the mixing bowl to the icing.

“There can be no shortcuts,” Schicker said. “The goal of me and my employees is to delight our customers.”

Although Bev’s Bakery is known for specialty cakes, Schicker also offers a wide variety of cookies, muffins, donuts, pastries, breads, pastries, cheesecakes, stickybuns and candied apples, to name a few. Over the years the bakery has been a popular venue for Battle Lake area residents, summer and winter tourists, golfers, fishermen and others.

Their four children — Chandra, Colton, McKayla and McClain — have, in one way or another, also contributed to the success of Bev’s Bakery in Battle Lake.

The bakery, after some remodeling, reopened Friday, April 25. It’s located along main street in downtown Battle Lake.
