Dave Rund has resigned as head coach of the Fergus Falls girls' varsity basketball team just eight weeks after leading the squad to its first state basketball tournament appearance.
Sources connected with the girls basketball program say that Rund met with members of his girls team Tuesday morning and broke the news. Rund made the announcement to next year's seniors, juniors and sophomores on Tuesday.
Athletic Director Gary Schuler told The Journal that he was unable to make a statement on the matter. A statement regarding the program could come Thursday.
Rund, reached Tuesday night, acknowledged the resignation.
"I've had 19 years of being a high school coach and a teacher and I haven't known a different life," said Rund. "It's just time for a change."
Rund led the Fergus Falls girls to their first state tournament appearance in March after winning the Section 8AAA championship and finishing runner-up in the Central Lakes Conference.
The Otters had a 24-5 record but lost to Minnehaha Academy 49-44 in overtime in the first round of the Class AAA State Tournament.
Following the tournament, Rund was named the 2007-08 Class AAA girls coach of the year.
"I've thoroughly enjoyed the challenges and successes," Rund said. "Probably the most important thing is the relationships that I've had with the players over the years. It's been fun to see them grow beyond high school and become successful adults."
Rund is a sixth-grade teacher at Fergus Falls Middle School. He will continue to teach at the school.
The Fergus Falls School Board has not yet officially accepted Rund's resignation as head coach. The school board will meet next on May 12.
