Man in thong visits beach
Published Tuesday, August 5, 2008
A man in his sixties wearing a thong visited Pebble Lake Beach Monday afternoon, talking with a lifeguard out on the dock before leaving his card and driving away.
Fergus Falls police received a report of the incident at about 4 p.m. Monday. An officer contacted the man, telling him his dress was inappropriate and that he should not talk with lifeguards while they’re on duty. The man said he understood and apologized.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. When did it become illegal to go to the beach in a thong, and then talk to life guards? I bet if it were a younger person wearing a thong, & talking to the lifeguards it would not make the record section of this paper.

WTF? Doesn't sound like he was doing anything illegal to me! They had to print this because of the type of swim suit the guy had on???? Give me a friggin' break Fergus Falls!!!!!!!!!

I am pretty sure that the Journal didn't give the whole story here. The man was probably harassing the lifeguard (I have been told she is female)

OMG! Are you serious!?
It's a beach. If you go to the east coast, west coast...anywhere where there's a beach, you see people wearing thongs all the time!
But, good ol' Fergus Falls doesn't. God forbid there be any type of diversity in the effin' town.

A man in a speedo is one thing but a man in a thong is not common on the east or west cost or even in europe. It's plain creepy. Now if he had a lacy bra with the thong that would be normal.

When you look at what some of the girls are wearing out there, some are WAY worse than a thong, and many of them are too fat to even be wearing a bathing suit.

Well it was a pretty hot day out there. How many people actually go to pebble beach at all anymore?
I had a late lunch out there one hot day (I kept my shorts on over my thong ;) good thing I ain't sixty yet) and noticed only about three swimmers, one fishing kid and 2 or 3 life guards. The place is nothing like I remember it from the late 70s into the 80s

this is age and sex discrimination. if a hot young female wore a thong to the beach there would be a parade. they would erect a statue to commemorate the occasion.

I just hope the Chinese are not offended by this

Was it also neccessary to mention the guy's approximate age? I guess you need to be of a certain age and gender to choose your own attire. By the way, what did the card say? I'm curious to know what kind of business he is in.

Maybe it was Schletty wearing one of the pairs of thong underwear he stole from the girls apartments he broke into. Oh wait, he's still in jail!!!!!!! Maybe it was Nirschel with some kid's thongs on.........oh come to think of it, he's in jail again too!!!!!

I think it must be a safe bet to say the man was probably harassing the lifeguard-and that she absolutely did the right thing by calling the police...

I think there needs to be a screening process for people who purchase thongs. I cant think of one good reason a guy should be wearing something like this. From what I understand women are repulsed by this also. Guys...cover your butt cheeks, please. Especially if I happen to be down at the sand-poured-over-weeds-and-grass area we call Pebble "Beach".

Alright the guy was probably an old perv with delusions of how good he looks in the thong. Its called a man growing old. As if some young hard body would be interested in him. I too suffer from this delusion at times and my wifes laughter brings me back to earth. I realize the only time I would have ever looked good close to naked was perhaps as a newborn.
One good thing in all this is it shows from some of the comments we here in Fungus have a good sense of humor.

why won't they tell us the name of the guy in the thong? he left his card.
obviously he wanted to be known.
I've met aging marathon runners that are in better shape than some of our teens.
I don't see how this should have involved the police.
I agree this is humorous, but at the same time, what does it say about our freedoms?
You can bet if this guy was scouting for a possible business site, we've lost him and all his friends!
We need to lighten up around here if we are to attract new people to this area!
so he thought he looked good in a thong?
LOL
whatever, and whats wrong with talking to a lifeguard?
I've seen plenty of others do that.
maybe we should have a annual old dude in a thong contest?
that would bring in some business and some good humor!
We could defiantly sell a lot of beer at an event like that!
LOL

This is still news? Can't they copy and paste something from the Fargo Forum in here like they usually do?

INTERESTING!
I was given this link and I found the whole incident so interesting from SO many angles:
Regional mores, age discrimination, esthetics bias, sex bias, police taking it upon themselves to be fashion police (who determines what is/isn't appropriate?)--Most police couldn't even give you a brief and coherent explication of US Constitution or even the Bill of Rights, never mind local code.
Here's my take:
Did he bother the lifeguard? Then the police should have told him, like they did, that that isn't appropriate. Did someone put in a complaint about what the man was wearing? (it does break code in most communities in the United States). If not, at least in the West Coast, the police will only act out in case that the individual is acting in a lewd fashion, not just walking around. No complain, no lewd behavior, no action. It is a Free country after all. Does it mean that I would've liked to been there and see this display? Probably not. But I can always look away. Such an individual will not bring down the morals of the local community, will not destroy the sensibilities of the local children, are not a danger to the local women, no matter what the local conservatives say.
Lastly, WHERE is Fergus Falls? Isn't that the name of the town in the classic film "It's a Wonderful Life"?
Minnesota? Beautiful state.
But, why is there a banner at the bottom of this page with a photograph of the Manhattan Beach (Calif.) Pier at sunset? I know this pier very well! It's right down the street from my house (where people can wear thongs if they want to, even if most don't take advantage of it.)
