Watermelon Day is Saturday
Published Thursday, August 14, 2008
The third Saturday in August, this year on the 16th, is a fun time in Vining when the community hosts its annual Watermelon Day. The event is billed as “The Biggest Small Town Celebration in Otter Tail County.”
Watermelon is served free. This annual celebration hosts 70 to 100 arts and crafts vendors, a petting zoo for the kids, live music, bingo, 5/10K Run/Walk, parade and other events.
As the citizens of Vining say, “The door to Vining is always open and all are welcome.”
Vining is located 25 miles east of Fergus Falls. The Otter Trail Scenic Byway runs through Vining which enables people to enjoy wooded hills, peaceful scenery, historic sites and crystal clear lakes.
And if you like outdoor sculptures, Vining is the place for you. Vining native Ken Nyberg, father of space shuttle astronaut Karen Nyberg, has numerous pieces of his work scattered throughout the city, from a cowboy sitting on a fence greeting visitors to a nationally recognized 11-foot-high, 1,200-pound sculpture of a foot.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Post a comment
