Craigslist meeting turns violent for Fergus man

Published Thursday, August 21, 2008

A 49-year-old Fergus Falls man was assaulted Wednesday night by a Twin Cities woman he met on Craigslist.

According to Fergus Falls police, the man had invited a 19-year-old Twin Cities woman to his home on North Court Street after meeting her online. The woman showed up at his home at about 9:40 p.m., joined by a female accomplice. The two proceeded to punch the victim in the mouth, put him in a headlock and scrape the handle of a kitchen knife across his back, causing minor injuries.

They left with his cell phone and television.

The man contacted police just before 10 p.m., telling them the assault had occurred about 20 minutes beforehand. He declined medical treatment.

An investigation is ongoing.

This is not the first violent incident orchestrated via Craigslist, on online networking site featuring free classified ads for jobs, housing, pets, personals and other services.

Twenty-four-year-old Katherine Olson of Minneapolis was murdered last October after responding to an ad for a nanny on the site. The 19-year-old Savage man who posted the ad was charged with second-degree murder in connection with her death.

Family members said Olson had used Craigslist to find jobs in the past, with positive results.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. Hmm, what was a 49 year old man planning to do with a 19 year old he found on Craigslist? Was that a 20 roses service or 100 roses?

This 49 year old should hook up with "thong guy" written up in the Journal a few weeks back. They might be compatible.

I really don't think the issue is what this man was planning. By law she is an adult and it is non of our business.
It is unfortunate that this had to happen....maybe he will seek a relationship with someone his own age after this.

Oh, I think it's fair to wonder why a 49-year-old man invited a girl 30 years his junior over after meeting her on the internet. Sounds a little like Dateline predators in reverse!

wow if i was this guy i would feel like a complete idiot especially after it was a feature story in the Journal

Well....we live in AMERICA and it is non of our business. Dateline predators is for 'underage' children...because that is when it is our business and against the law.

ROTFL, I think I just figured out who the 49 year old man is. Way too funny, that must have been some TV. There aren't many residence addresses on N Court Street.

Either one could have lied about their age.

well, i would ask what the 19 year old was going to do with a man 30 years older but i guess that got answered

She may be a few bricks short of a load also if she came all the way from Minneapolis for a TV and a cell phone. I wonder if she was Miss October 1991?

In this state prostitution is still ILLEGAL, if the 49-year old was engaged in an illegal activity, that negates his 'Victim' status.

otterfan could have benefited from one of Crome-Dome's classes, maybe it would have learned to spell none.

Also, I don't think we know for sure what age she was. The 49-year old says she was 19, but where is the proof?

Posted by puddlejumper (anonymous) on August 21, 2008 at 3:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

This is my business. This is my town and I share it with the man who was attacked. I want to know what kind of people are sharing my home town with me, my family, friends and neighbors.
Besides, if we don't hold this person to a certian standard (even if it's just to be normal or decent) who does?

Posted by bigkahunaburger (anonymous) on August 21, 2008 at 4 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Prostitution? Money for sex? I didn't read that part. Where are you guys coming up with this. I once sold a guitar pedal to a guy on craigslist, and I'm pretty sure there was no non-consensual, underage, paid-for nookie involved. Wow. Standard Fergus folks - firm grasp on reality and modern times.

Of course I judge everything. I am a mother. I need to know my situations and surroundings to know my family is safe and secure where we are. Besides, haven't you ever heard someone say "people always assume the worse"

HFM, nobody cares...

As for posting twice, this software/server is messed up, it puts comments in out of order, and seems to randomly assign post times. I looked for the first post, didn't see anything updated, then re-wrote my thought and posted again, after that I saw two posts with two way different times.

"19" year old girls don't meet up with 49 year old overweight jobless bums for adult play unless 'Roses' are involved. Oh My God what are we about to find out about one of the town's regular troublemakers.

Posted by lifterpuller (anonymous) on August 21, 2008 at 4:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I like how everyone assumes that he was up to some nefarious deed just because he was talking to someone through craigslist. Maybe he was trying to sell his tv on craigslist, and that's why she was coming to town and knew to take it. also, I don't like knowing the morality police (puddlejumper) are roaming around judging everyone. What other people decide to do behind closed doors and curtains is no business of mine, and I don't see how it's any business of anyone else other than the parties involved.

its none of our business what his intentions were. The man is a legal adult as was his date(attacker). The problem with FF is everyones inability to keep their mouths shut. It's none of your business, so take the high road and keep your negative opinions to yourselves.

puddlejumper- you don't need to know everything. the only thing you need to do is to arm your kids with the power of good judgement, if you do that, everything else is irrelevant. And--I don't se how you, or anyone else ties themselves into this particular matter. Change your name to puddlejumpertoconclusionsirrationally.

Norse...where do you come off saying that this is prostitution?? That was NOT part of the story and is completely irrelevant. Nobody knows why she was up here. All of the nosey citizens of Fergus need to keep their mouths shut, until they know the FULL story. It's crazy how many false stories are made up in this town, and believed by practically everyone on this frickin' journal. Please people!

The Daily Journal starts all the gossip, people have no where else to go with it, aside from assuming the worste. Quite Honestly, I don't think this story should have even been in the paper. Or atleast written the way it was. It could have been simply put, Such as "fergus Falls man, assulted by someone he met from Craigs List such and such time, and was robbed." Plain and simple..

No Matter otterfan, tell us why she was 'up there' where your here is, and clear the air for everyone. Aparently we don't yet know all the facts, gosh we don't even know the name of the 49 year old much less why he couldn't handle two young girls, did they know karate and five other asian words, was he in a compromised position, or was he just too big slow and dumb to defend himself. Yeah if he had his new TV up for sale on craigs that is certainly something a 19 year old girl would be interested in. Since the FFPD is continuing to investigate perhaps someone is afraid to clear the air and fill us all in. Just a block away from this location they found a box of toys a couple weeks back, did someone advertise those on craigs list yet?

This guy couldn't have handled a 19 year old when he was 19.....to fat to run and chase any girls buns.............The police think they are protecting the innocent (pervert) by not publishing his name. Reverse address look-up on google sure comes in handy.

Norse: Thank You..my point exactly...thank you for coming back to earth and realizing that coming to conclusions in 'our' own minds is pointless. We don't know the full story and calling someone something they may or may not be, before knowing all the facts is stupid and hearsay. I was just pissed that you got off thinking that this person is a prostitute and that I am somehow someone you know living in an apt. somewhere with the name ML.?? That's really a great imagination....keep up the good detective work Norse.

Sure ting otterfan, I have since realized that yours was not a Freudian, just 3rd grade grammar and spelling abilities. Obviously when you wrote that 'Nobody knows why she was up here' that didn't mean here as in your place. It follows along with 'non' equals none, and no is supposed to mean know. As for the scenario.....
It is still quite obvious that a 49 year old overweight bum arranged to meet a supposedly 19 year old girl in his residence at 9:40pm on a Wednesday night. That girl supposedly travelled from the twin-cities to meet with a 'man' 30 years older than her....A) to buy a TV or cellphone? or B) to have a consensual relationship? or C) to eat a pizza together? or D) in answer to a personals ad on craigslist where the exchange of money would coincide with some sort of encounter between the 49 year old and a teenager? or E) a set-up from the beginning in a bizarre plot to fleece a 49 year old man out of his prized TV? or F) an S&M encounter arranged on craigslist which got out of control...Did he enjoy being head locked by a girl?
If you have the craigslist ad for either of the parties please do post it so we can know for sure what led to the encounter.

If your an older man who invites a couple of teenage girls up to your house and they kick your butt and steal your TV, don't call the police. Chalk it up as an embarrassing moment and go to the gym.

Its no duobt in my mind that you are the people that enjoy talking about others behind their backs. what he did as perfectly legal, and thats cool with me..when he starts looking for little kids..then we've got a serious problem. until then, hes still a law abiding citizen and deserves some cash for his phone and tv..and the girls should be in for assault/robbery. aren't they the criminals? but because you speculate that his intentions were less-than-honorable, you criticize him. time for fergtown to grow up.

Pish Posh...

How do we know this was about prostitution. I mean clearly he wanted to get some young nookie, maybe he thought she was going to give it up for free, maybe she thought he didn't pay enough and beat him up. remember she brought another accomplice so i guess maybe it was a three some. For an old guy, i guess that would be worth a TV and a cell phone, but i don't think he got what he wanted... Sorry guy, but just go to vegas where its legal and look for the little red light in the window.. :)

Amen Classof76, His name should have been in the article, just because it might embarass a high profile family name in this town is NO REASON to let his activities and mindset get pushed under the rug. If the Family themselves refuse to address the issues their blood relations cause, then the public and the system should be provided FACTS and information so that we can protect ourselves and our children from such dangers.

Let's find this supposed teenager, and her accomplice to get the facts and the whole story. Meanwhile may God's protecting hand remain on Fergus Falls and our precious youth.

Posted by Generally_Misunderstood (anonymous) on August 22, 2008 at 2:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Norse, I do agree with you that if there is a danger to the public we have a right to know. But as of right now the only thing that has been presented to the public is that an individual was assaulted by two others after placing an ad of some sort. Anything beyond that is nothing more then extrapolation on the posters part.

Unless charges are brought up against this individual for whatever reason, it does no good to post libelous messages against someone as a few of you have. Yes, it may have been this individual you speak of, but until charges are levied for anything nefarious, it's best not to mount your posse and start on a witch hunt based on whatever perceptions or previous misdeeds. I think a few of you have forgotten the fundamental guiding principle of 'innocent until proven guilty.' Yes if there is a sexual predator on the loose as a parent I want them tagged and monitored. But nothing more then a rumored consenting adults hooking up is none of my business. If this is what was the original idea behind the ad and meeting then great. Because it was a positive outlet for this individual instead of preying on others as a few have alluded to. Sex between consenting adults paid or not is a victim-less crime.

Good website for future use. Thank you.

But I see nothing under the name previously given that alludes to any sexual perversion. What am I missing? So again I refer to my previous statement about assumptions on this particular police call. I don't know this person nor have I ever had contact. So while having a nefarious background may be deemed karma coming back to haunt this individual, I just don't believe it's anyone's business to speculate what happened that could tarnish someone's reputation. Just look at the LRH/FFMG lock down situation or recent weeks, what could have been a simple misunderstanding has destroyed the reputation and career of a community member. If there was truth to it, then it needed to be confirmed by those in a position to do so, not the general public to play nothing but a glorified game of telephone.

I just advise caution because you never know when you could be in the opposite role having your own character called into question unjustly.

Um a conviction for "Liquor-Persons Under 21-Illegal Acts"
and if we recall similar news reports there was something about luring young kids to an apartment.

These types of things build on one another. If you put a frog in a pan of boiling water, it will jump out in shock, but if you place that same frog in room teperature water, then apply slowly increasing heat, that frog will remain in place until it burns to death.

Pay attention to the warning signs before a more serious crime gets commited.

Well, I see my last comment was censored and I have no idea why. Guess it is because it is one of those high profile families from Frozen Flatts, MN USA. If this person would have been some poor low class citizen his name would have been all over the place. All police calls are of public record, so isn't it interesting that it is okay for the "Daily Urinal" to censor his name out of the article and also for them to censor my comments. Oops! Maybe it was the "Daily Urinal" comment that did it!!! Thanks for the tip on the MN Crimanals Web Site. I see he is under probation for a felony until Feb. of 2009. It’s not about being embarrassed or ashamed; it’s not about wanting the person to be nailed. It IS about taking responsibility for bringing a relative from an un-acceptable position into an acceptable place in society. Defending them under the law and behind a license to practice law does nothing to protect the public in general. Sure anyone who knows the history, tendencies, and personality of such a person can take actions to keep the ones close to them from being a party to his/her actions. What about the people who do not know the history, tendencies, and personality of such a lurker? When such a lurker frequents locations where youth gather, or even sets up a business selling products that attract our young people...Are the unwitting not at a high risk of becoming ensnared by that which some people could have protected them from?
Have victims in the past been encouraged with money to not testify or press charges against the lurker, thus preventing the proper charges from being filed, or the proper sentence from being applied?

These are the reasons some might be selfishly responsible for enabling the actions and danger to continue.

While I am a firm believer in Love the sinner, and rebuke the sin, we must first identify the sin and let it be seen for what it is. Only then can the true power of forgiveness be realized.

Perhaps the Craigslist listing requested to be assaulted and robbed.
He decided he didn't like it.

When will his family stop "protecting" him???? When he has raped someone??? Or even worse??? Probably not even then. They should know by now that everyone in FF knows who he is and what he does to people and have him locked up. He did creepy things 30 plus years ago in high school. Isn't it time his family did something about him????

I see the FF Journal Staff removed Marley's previous comment stating the man's name. That is censorship!!! What ever happened to free speech and the right of the people!!! I guess in Fergus Falls only the elite crowd has rights. It is a public record who this man is. Like I said before he has always been creepy and people have the right to know who he is and what he does and his family should get him off of the streets ASAP!!!

I'm surprised the story was even posted like this but to even say anything about where the person met this girl is not relevant even though it is a little odd we hear about it all the time in big cities I live in Norfolk, VA. I'm pretty sure I know who this is to the man who sits on the street corner I moved out of Fergus Falls due to there's alot of bad people moving in it use to be so peaceful.

sounds to me like jobless bums complaining about a wealthy man dating younger women. these thieves should be prosecuted to the maximum extent of the law. sleazy women shouldn't be allowed to steal just because a man has earned a decent living.

Who said he was wealthy neocon? I'm pretty sure I know who this is and he's far from wealthy lol!

I know that my daughter went to Java 101 and he was always there and made the comment that she was "HOT", but she was also only 15 years old. If my son did even half the things that this guy did, they would have him locked away someplace.

So, anyone know if the 2 women who assaulted and robbed this fellow have been apprehended?

almanza, so true.... i moved to saint cloud to get away from all the crap in fergus. It felt as if all the gutter trash was moving in, all the kids with potential and people were moving out, The town is dying.... Sad when a city by and by should be thriving like alexandria, is dying... do you remember when alexandria first got their wal mart and went super. DO YOU SEE ALL THE OTHER STORES and businesses that have sprung up next to it now. People do you see how its grown in a mere ten years....

Then why on earth would people want to fight walmart becoming super, why on earth would we let the city council make stupid decisions.. Checks and balances... city council doesn't have their job forever, if they are doing a horse crap job then the people in their ward need to get together and start signing and asking for a resignation...

THE CITY IS DYING... and the people, and the city government are doing nothing to stop it....

I personally dealt with this man this is why I say this he tried to hold my hand when I was 14 years old needless to say my mother went down there and threatened him. He's crazy! I am a military wife and live in VA now trust me it's not like we don't have crime but FF is a small town and needs to deal with this man say put him into JAIL and he should be taught that this is a lesson learned no man this age in their right mind would go for a girl this young especially one who is as broke as he is. LOL!!!!!!!

So, I guess if the man is wealthy,it's ok then?

Posted by classof76 (anonymous) on September 22, 2008 at 11:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

almanza: This man may not be wealthy, but shares the last name of a very prominent Fergus Falls family who has owned a business on Lincoln Ave. that bears the family last name and has been around for ever---this guy is a relative of their's. That is why the FFDJ did not publish his name---lest the FFDJ tarnish the name of these prominent people!!
Like I said before he was a creep even in high school 32 years ago and is still getting by with it!!

doctipster: This guy is not gutter trash that moved in to FF--He was born in FF!!! The family name is old FF!!

Killdeer I never said it would be ok if it happened to a wealthy man but the girls obviously knew they were dealing with a perv who really needed to be taught a lesson. I know how FF works everyone who gives money to the community is left untouched but someone who doesn't is harrassed by the police.

In my experience, there is not a family around who does not have a few skeletons in their closets, or a few family members who have caused grief and heartache to their families all their lives. Sometimes people just fall thru the cracks, until something major occurs. IMO, it's a dangerous precedent to start locking people up for things they haven't done, just MIGHT do...what a witch hunt that could become!

The only problem with Fergus Falls is everyone knows something before you do. You could be pregnant and the doctor hasn't called you with the news but your neighbor already knows, I personally know someone who had that happen there. Most of the teenage girls are pregnant there, and theres alot of crime that happens in this small town. That's because they know they can get help there say WELFARE and this guy continues to live downtown with all the stuff he does wrong. It makes me sick and everyone doesnt say anything.

maybe you guys can just let this go already. this story is over a month old and you're still cat-fighting over the whole thing. i'm sorry you have nothing better to do in your lives, but its time to move on.
