Hurricanes hoping to sink Pirates at state

Published Thursday, August 21, 2008

The stakes will be sky-high Friday night when Dave Johnson’s Fergus Falls Hurricanes get their second crack at Blue Earth in a Class C state tournament game. Having crashed through the first round of state play last Friday by beating Detroit Lakes 3-2 in 11 innings, the Hurricanes will pit themselves against the Region 4 champs in a 6 p.m. game in Chaska.

The Hurricanes will be sending right-hander Casey Kowalski to the mound. The hard-working right-hander fanned nine Detroit Lakes batters last week but did not post the victory. It was the same case back in June when the Hurricanes lost a 9-1 decision to Blue Earth in the Green Isle Tournament.

“I think we’re really playing good overall. I’m encouraged that Casey Kowalski is pitching his best ball of the year,” said Johnson, who will be starting a hurler who is 7-3 overall with a 1.83 ERA. Six errors doomed the Hurricanes in their first meeting with the Pirates, who have a solid club on the mound and at the plate.

“They are a solid, all-around club,” said Johnson. “They have good pitching, a lot of depth on their pitching staff and they’ve got guys who can hit all the way through their lineup.”

Aaron Wendt has been a big player for Blue Earth on the mound and at the plate. Wendt is 7-0 on the hill with a 1.64 ERA. Wendt is hitting .388 with 33 runs and 34 RBIs.

Cody Hyland is 7-1 for the Pirates with a 2.52 ERA.

Justin Schaible is Blue Earth’s top RBI man with 35. Schaible is also hitting .400. Todd Rasmussen is swinging a.448 bat while Cody Sukalski has scored a team-high 37 runs and is hitting .390.

Alex Conboy, who drove in Ben Brimhall with the winning run last week, is leading the Hurricanes with a .387 mark. Kellen Shebeck and Matt Brekke both have 27 RBIs. Brekke has scored a team-high 30 runs.
